It’s the same story, but a different year.
The Bastrop Lady Bears cross country team will enter Friday’s District 25-5A Championships as the favorites.
It’s just how they have entered the last three District 25-5A meets.
Bastrop has won the district title each time they are the favorites.
“They have a tradition of winning here at Bastrop and these kids want to continue that tradition,” said first-year head coach Kim Miller.
As if a fourth-straight district championship wasn’t motivation enough, the Lady Bears are looking for a little revenge on former coach Chris Carter, who bolted for rival Westlake this summer.
The move left a bitter taste with the girls, who told Carter, “this is just going to intensify things,” Carter said.
While Carter’s Lady Chaps look to be the only thing standing in the way of the Lady Bears and their fourth district championship, they have yet to beat Bastrop in any meet this season.
The Lady Bears, led by their junior star Hillari Raemsch, defeated Westlake at the Richardo Romo Classic on Sept. 19 and then continued its dominance through the rest of the season.
Raemsch, who is considered by many across the district as one of the top runners, has placed in the Top 10 in each of her last two district meets.
She is one of the favorites in a very long list of talented runners.
“It’s defiantly a possibility,” Miller said. “All of the girls get faster and stronger with each race. We have competed in some tough meets this year and I think it has prepared them for the main event.”
