NEW BRAUNFELS — In the wake of the one year anniversary of his death, the New Braunfels boys basketball team will honor the late Cliff Wilkins all season.
New Braunfels head basketball coach Greg Woodall said Friday the basketball team will leave an empty seat on its bench for the entire season.
The Unicorns will drape a jersey with Wilkins’ name on the empty chair. At the end of the season, Wilkins’ jersey will be raised to the rafters next to the state tournament banners.
Wilkins passed away Nov. 27, 2009 after a long battle with lung cancer. He was a 1968 graduate of Bastrop High School.
New Braunfels takes on Schertz-Clements Saturday at noon and will have a ceremony honoring Wilkins that is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
In his basketball coaching career, Wilkins led three different teams to the state basketball tournament, including Bastrop in 1974, Columbus and New Braunfels, twice.
He is one of four coaches in Texas to take three different teams to the state tournament.
