Wilhelm moves on to club hoping colleges take notice
Thursday, December 10, 2009 |
The simple question for Sydney Wilhelm is, “what’s next?”
While the answer of the aforementioned question has yet to be determined, for Wilhelm it’s more likely about where.
For a senior who had the best season of her four-year career at Bastrop, Wilhelm is keeping her options open as she enters club season after Thanksgiving.
Normally a two-sport athlete at Bastrop, Wilhelm has decided to forgo the 2010 softball season and concentrate on volleyball.
Wilhelm plays on the prestigious Austin Juniors Volleyball Club Navy team, the second tier team below the 17 Mizuno, the 2008 junior Olympic national champions.
The season begins after Thanksgiving and will continue through July.
She is joined on that team by Elgin’s Daniela Cervantes, the 2009 All-Bastrop County Offensive Player of the Year.
Wilhelm hopes it might lead to bigger and better things for her as she prepares for college in the fall of 2010.
“Hopefully, once club season gets going I’ll get some scholarship offers,” Wilhelm said. “Colleges tend to recruit more from club teams.”
Wilhelm is currently considering offers from a couple of schools in the Carolinas, including Costal Carolina near Myrtle Beach, SC.
Her all-around abilities make her a marketable player.
She led Bastrop County offensively with 3.2 kills per game and defensively with 4.6 digs per game.
Wilhelm was also a very efficient hitter, meaning she made very few errors, and her serve was very accurate.
