“Did you see that?”
“How many guys did he just make miss?”
Those were common comments heard throughout press boxes across Central Texas after media pundits and school officials watched Josiah Monroe play football for the first time.
Press box announcers often called him “Joshua,” but Josiah made sure they didn’t forget his name again.
With his razzle and dazzle style of play, Monroe has become one of the most talked about players in the region.
His 3,000-plus yards of offense is just a small part of what the junior quarterback did.
He was a team leader and now a proven winner.
If he didn’t beat opposing defenders through the air with his 2,314 yards passing, he could do it with his legs.
That was probably the most eye-catching part of Monroe’s football style.
He was slippery, making even the strongest defensive lines and linebackers miss him.
But what makes him the most special, according to head coach Gerald Perry, is his unselfishness.
“Josiah is a competitor,” Perry said. “He’d rather win than get all the individual awards and stats. He’s a team player.”
Monroe is gearing up for a busy offseason, as letters continue to roll into the athletic office from many colleges hoping to recruit the athletic junior.
For now, however, Monroe and Bastrop prepare for a move to Class 4A, which undoubtedly has many teams hoping they don’t have to try and defend Monroe.
