In an effort to help county employees feel good about themselves, County Judge Ronnie McDonald is adding a new component to the wellness initiative started last year.
Called Power Hour, the county will bring a motivational speaker to the gazebo on the front lawn of the courthouse on the first Friday of each month at noon. The program is intended to go hand-in-hand with the more physical component of the program, which encourages diet and exercise among county employees.
“It’s all geared toward encouraging us to be healthy – not only physically, but in mind and spirit, too,” McDonald said. “It’s working towards having a healthier workforce.”
Already, McDonald said, many county employees are walking more, eating better and even participating in friendly competitions between departments to see who can lose the most pounds.
“I’m pretty excited about this,” McDonald said. “If an individual can feel better about themselves, they will be a better employee.”
He said the program is part of the county’s attempt to make work be a positive experience. And he wants the whole community to feel like they can take part.
“If we set the example, other folks will follow,” he said.
The first Power Hour is set for Friday, Feb. 5 at noon at the gazebo and will feature Pastor Robert Chris Pena of Foundation Christian Ministries. Live music may also be offered at some of the events. Employees and members of the community are encouraged to brown bag their lunch and come listen to an inspirational message.
“I like the direction we are going,” McDonald said. “And we want folks from all around the county to come.”
