ELGIN — Jasmine Simmons isn’t able to remember the last time Elgin’s girls basketball team made the playoffs.
She’s not the only one on the team.
Simmons would have been a newborn in 1993, which was the last time Elgin made the girls basketball playoffs.
Fast forward to 2010 and Simmons is now embarking on her senior season and Elgin has snapped the 17-year drought.
Still, Simmons said she’s not satisfied with just making the playoffs.
“This feels pretty good, but I’ll be disappointed if we don’t win our first game,” She said.
Elgin (15-17) plays Huntsville Tuesday at Bryan High School in Bryan in a bi-district matchup.
Head coach Jackie Bowman in his fifth season at the helm for Elgin’s girls basketball program.
He has built this program with just 14 girls when he started into the playoff team it is today.
He sees Elgin’s return to the playoffs as the next step.
“It’s going to help us create some interest,” Bowman said. “We had 35 kids out for basketball this year, but it’s more about quality than quantity.”
Elgin’s playoff fate was decided weeks ago when the Lady Cats defeated San Marcos to control a tie-breaker.
The Lady Cats still had the brunt of their schedule ahead of them with games against Hays and Del Valle, which were tied for first place.
Bowman said anything from here on out is just, “gravy on the biscuit.”
“It’s been our goal since the beginning of the season to get into the playoffs,” he said. “We have been close in the past and I knew we were going to get here. This group is deserving to get to the playoffs.”
