A celebration of African–American heritage in Bastrop County will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Center for the Performing Arts.
Hosted by the Bastrop Independent School District, along with the African–American Heritage Foundation, the first annual African–American Heritage Expo and Celebration will showcase the talents of many of the district’s children through poetry readings, dramatizations and choral and band presentations. The expo will include ethnic foods, clothing, music, art, dance and historical artifacts, including a display of the Buffalo Soldiers and many more items of interest to the full Bastrop County community.
The program will be emceed by James Irby of Fox 7 and Shannon Powell of KXAN.
A scholarship will be awarded to one of Bastrop’s top students and several Heritage Awards to trailblazers in the fields of education and the arts will be presented.
The accomplishments of local trailblazers such as award-winning, internationally-acclaimed musician Hannibal Lokumbe, producer of American Idol and BHS class of ‘89 graduate Ron DeShay, former BISD superintendent Roderick Emanuel and County Judge Ronnie McDonald will be highlighted.
