One way of getting benefits information out to veterans and their families is through outreach programs such as the one conducted by The Department of Veterans Affairs. The Waco Regional Office of the Department of Veterans Affairs will be co-hosting a Veterans’ Town Hall Meeting with the Bastrop County Veterans Service Office on Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Bastrop County Courthouse Annex in the second floor conference room.
This is a great opportunity for veterans, active duty military members and military dependents to find out about their eligibility for federal and state benefits. Representatives from the Bastrop County Veterans Service Office, Texas Veterans Commission, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, La Grange Outreach Clinic, Internal Revenue Service and other veteran support organizations will be on hand to answer your questions about veterans benefits eligibility and to explain the application process and timelines and help complete application forms. Other specialists will be available to talk about specific programs such as the Austin Veteran Center and veterans’ employment.
I routinely talk with veterans and family members who are unaware of the benefits for which they may be eligible. Basic eligibility for most federal and state benefits is based upon discharge from active military service under other than dishonorable conditions. Some benefits also require service during a wartime period but not necessarily in the theater of conflict itself and there are other service requirements for those who enlisted after Sept. 7, 1980 or served in the National Guard or Reserves.
Specific benefit eligibility is determined by legislation and changes as new laws are passed. Veterans’ benefit eligibility and the process for applying for those benefits can often be quite confusing and that is why federal, state, county and veterans organization benefits officers are available to help advise veterans and their families and guide them through the application process.
Veterans counselors from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Texas Veterans Commission, county veterans service officers and veterans organization service officers, such as those in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and many others, strive to help veterans and their survivors deal with the often confusing and overwhelming task of completing the correct forms and applications and collecting the appropriate documentation and evidence to support a claim for benefits.
Potential benefits for veterans and their families could include compensation for service-incurred injuries or illnesses, pensions, health care, nursing home and home care assistance, rehabilitation and education programs, home and land loans, life insurance, counseling services, burial honors and assistance and personal property tax exemptions, to name a few. Each benefit can have additional eligibility requirements that must be met. Veterans benefit counselors and service officers review each situation on a case-by-case basis, verify eligibility status and provide detailed guidance for veterans benefit applications.
I hope veterans and their families will take advantage of this great opportunity on Feb. 27 to get their benefits eligibility questions answered and discuss veterans’ issues one-on-one with the experts.
