WAXAHACHIE — The Bastrop Tribe Consolidated Warriors boys basketball team are state champions.
The Warriors miraculous run to the Texas Christian Athletic League Class 1A championship culminated on Saturday with a 52-48 win over Houston Central Christian Academy.
Tribe Consolidated fell behind after the first quarter, but led by one after the end of the period and never looked back.
“I am very proud of the boys and their effort,” said head coach Bill Sharp, who won four state championships as a head coach in Arizona. “Every player had a part in our success. We lost our first three games of the season and were not playing as a team. From that point, I think the kids were determined to make the changes needed.”
Isaiah Tyler was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Willie Helm and Vance Ray were named to the all-tournament team.
The Warriors won a close game in the semifinals over Sulphur Springs C.H.E.S.S. to get to the championship game.
Tribe Consolidated has been knocked out of the first round of the TCAL State Basketball Tournament in each of the last two years.
The Warriors team was made of up Tyler, Helm, Ray, Kevin Jabonski, Jonathan Jones, Nick Loudenbeck and Darby Pienti.
