AUSTIN — Ellyn Rivers ended Saturday’s championship finals the same way she entered them.
Rivers took seventh place in both of her events — the 100 yard butterfly and 100 backstroke Saturday at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
She entered Saturday’s championships as the No. 7 seed in both events.
In her first event, Rivers took seventh place in the girls 100 yard butterfly with a time of 59.25 seconds, which was slightly slower than her preliminary time on Friday.
Waco Midway’s Emily Neubert, the silver medalist in 2009, won the event with her time of 56.06 seconds. Neubert was the top seed going into the state championships.
In the 100 backstroke, the Elgin swimmer took seventh with a time of 59.70, which was four-tenths of a second slower than her time on Friday.
Despite her disappointment with her times, Rivers was happy about her finish.
“I did a lot better than I have in the past (at the state championships), even if I didn’t go as fast,” she said. “I improved a lot and while I am disappointed in my times, I will use it to work harder in the off-season to get ready for next year.”
Regional rival Allie Sullins of Magnolia West took home the gold in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.20.
Sullins was the silver medalist in 2009 in the 100 back.
Firsco Wakeland’s Alex Huff, the 2009 100 backstroke champion, took home silver.
