Don’t look now, but the Bastrop Bears are right in the middle of the hunt in the District 25-5A race.
Bastrop helped their cause Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Akins at Bear Field, thinks in large part to the Bears taking advantage of a few Akins mistakes.
The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Justin Froncek was plated on an error after reaching base on a single.
Cade Staton was drove in by Colton Tucker after reaching base on another error by the Eagles.
Akins committed three errors in the first inning and that proved costly.
The Bears, however, went into cruise control and went three innings without a hit.
Akins threatened to break into Bastrop’s lead and had five runners left on base in scoring position through the firstĀ  five innings.
The Bears finally got their third and final hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Austin Hughes hit a shot to right field, but that would be the last little bit of offense Bastrop could put together.
Akins, meanwhile, finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when Blake Huffman drove in Lorenzo Mensoza, who reached third by way of two stolen bases.
The Eagles continued to leave runners stranded in scoring position as Jordan Steward, who represented the tying run, was stranded at secondĀ  base.
In the top of the seventh inning, Bastrop head coach Mark Williams brought in Tucker in relief for Jared Hodgson, who struck out three batters and gave up one earned run in six innings.
Tucker got all three batters to ground out to pick up the save and give Bastrop its second district victory of the season.
“We did the same thing at Austin the other night, but ended up losing,” Williams said. “We are playing a lot better defensively, but I am still trying to get these guys to understand they have to battle for seven innings.”
The Bears will take on Bowie Thursday at the Burger Sports Complex in Austin. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
