Shigemoto squatted 305 pounds, benched 140 and dead lifted 335 for a total weight of 790 at the state meet.
“(Brandy) improved her lifting throughout the year,” said Bastrop powerlifting head coach Todd Patmon. “She showed great determination while training for regionals alone and worked out through spring break to get ready for the state meet. She is just a great person.”
Weslaco’s Sasha Martinez won the state championship with a total weight of 1,040.
Martinez had a squat of 390 points, a bench of 270 and a dead lift of 380.
Smithville’s Brieon Brown took home second place in the Division II 275 pound weight class at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state championships Saturday in Abilene.
Brown had a squat of 700 pounds, a bench press of 405 and a dead lift of 600 for a total weight of 1,705 pounds.
Brown finished just 45 pounds behind state champion Joe Trevino of Raymondville.
Trevino only out-lifted Brown in the squat with a weight of 800.
“Brieon did a great job,” said Smithville powerlifting head coach Wayne Childs. “He has spent countless hours in the weight room while the rest of the school was still asleep. It all paid off for him Saturday.”
