The Bastrop Bears got a feel this week what it’s going to be like during two-a-days in August.
Battling heat in the mid-to-upper 90s on Thursday, Bastrop strapped on full pads for the first time during spring drills.
The hand full of fans in the stands of Erhard Field saw a young Bears team that at times looked like they were in Week 0 form.
“We had some sparks and showed some signs that we are coming along,” said head coach Gerald Perry. “The important thing was that our young kids got a lot of reps. That’s why you do spring football.”
Bastrop practiced about 1 1/2 hours on Thursday, scrimmaging for the final 30 minutes while rotating in first and second team offenses and defenses.
During the full scrimmage, quarterback Josiah Monroe took no time marching his offense down field, completing his first three passes. It took Bastrop just five plays to get into the red zone.
Still, Perry said there were some things that still needed to be worked on.
“Kids are going to make mistakes,” Perry said. “We do 18 days of practice to get the little things fixed before we start two-a-days.”
Bastrop will pick up practice again Monday at Erhard Field. The Bears will be practicing at Erhard through Thursday.
Friday, Bastrop will practice at BISD Memorial Stadium from 5-7 p.m. and return to Erhard on Monday, May 17.
All practices at Erhard Field are from 4-6 p.m. and are open to the public.
The Bastrop Football Spring Showcase is scheduled for Saturday, May 22 at 5 p.m.  at BISD Memorial Stadium.
