Football: McFarland, Johnson to be inducted into hall of fame
Thursday, May 20, 2010 |
Bastrop head coach Gerald Perry will get one final look at his team before they break for the summer.
The Bears will host their annual spring showcase on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. at BISD Memorial Stadium.
The Maroon-White game will be the main event at 7:30 p.m., but the junior varsity, freshmen and middle school teams will also be on display.
“This is our last chance to get some film on these kids and it puts them in a game-like situation,” Perry said. “Hopefully, we will end on a positive note and be injury free.”
One of the traditions of the Bastrop Spring Showcase is the induction of past players and coaches into the Bastrop Hall of Fame.
This year, former coaching legend Les Johnson and player Octavious McFarland will be inducted into the hall of fame during halftime ceremonies.
Perry said that the hall of fame inductions are important.
“When we got here there wasn’t a lot of talk about the past,” Perry said. “We did a lot of research and found out that there were a lot of great players here, which is why we started the Bastrop Hall of Fame.”
This will be the third class inducted into the hall of fame.
Former inductees include, Larry Turner, Cliff Wilkins, Robert Goode, Matthew Homesley Sr., Ed Sanders and Donnie Aldridge.
McFarland, who has been working out with Bernard Blake at Erhard Field, said he was honored by the selection, especially to be inducted with his former coach.
“Overall, “it’s a special thing, but I am not about the individual awards,” he said.
Here is a look at the 2010 Bastrop Hall of Fame inductees:
