The Bastrop Lady Bears are headed for success.
That’s the direction new head coach Greg Horn sees Bastrop’s softball program going.
And why not?
The Lady Bears were competitive in 2010 and Horn has seen nothing, but success as a head coach.
“I met with the girls (Thursday) and they seemed very accepting of me and what I like to do,” Horn said. “I’ve been very successful at every school I have been at and I plan to do the same here.”
Horn, a graduate of Texas State University, was at Bay City before accepting the job at Bastrop.
He has seven years of coaching experience and has led his team to a winning district record in six of those years.
He has compiled a 59-23 district record and won three district championships and led his teams to five playoff appearances, reaching the regional quarterfinals three times.
Horn is familiar with the softball scene around Central Texas with stops in Thrall and Jarrell.
He said his familiarity with Bastrop and the area is what attracted him to the job.
“I have wanted to get back to the Austin area for a long time,” he said. “One thing I knew about Bastrop was that it was a great school and had great kids.”
Horn’s first challenge will be to find replacements for pitcher Jordan Mundine and catcher Brittany French.
“There is a couple of pitchers coming up. I haven’t seen them pitch, but I have heard good things about them, so I am optimistic there,” Horn said.
Another challenge Horn said he had to face will be the mental part of the game.
“During our meeting (Thursday), the errors was one of the things they brought up,” Horn said. “The confidence wasn’t there and one of the things I picked up on was that they realize that.”
Horn takes over for Gary Currie, who has spent the last two seasons coaching Bastrop.
