7-on-7: Bears head to Belton without QB for another chance at state
Wednesday, June 9, 2010 |
The Bastrop Bears will take another shot at qualifying for the state 7-on-7 tournament on Saturday, but they will do so without their star quarterback.
Josiah Monroe will miss Saturday’s state qualifier tournament in Belton because the senior will be taking the ACT college entrance exam.
Monroe’s absence will mean Bastrop will go with Dillon Becker, who missed most of spring practice due to an injury.
Becker was recently medically cleared to rejoin the Bastrop football team and saw his first off-season action Monday when Bastrop’s 7-on7 league began.
“He looked pretty good (Monday),” said Chris Olson, co-offensive coordinator.
Bastrop nearly qualified for the state 7-on-7 tournament two weeks ago in Cedar Park at the Round Rock State Qualifier.
Cedar Park dropped a touchdown pass on the final play of the game that would have lifted the Timberwolves over Stony Point and given Bastrop the tie-breaker in its pool.
In Cedar Park, Bastrop defeated this weekend’s host Belton 48-26.
Bastrop qualified for the state 7-on-7 tournament for the first time in 10 years in 2009, but needed two chances to do so.
If Bastrop fails to qualify Saturday there is a possibility the Bears could get a final chance at state if they could enter the Hays State Qualifier on June 26, but that’s only if there is an open spot in the tournament.
