AUSTIN — In the third at bat of the top of the seventh inning, Elgin’s Megan Moore finally got the call to enter the game from the North All-Stars’ coach David Sisson.
It might have been coincidental, but Bastrop’s Jordan Mundine had  also taken the mound for the South All-Stars in the same inning.
On the third pitch from Mundine, Moore blasted a shot that had the distance for the game’s first home run, but the wind caught it and the ball went foul.
Moore connected on the next one and tattooed a double to the centerfield wall to drive in the North’s final run of the game, sealing the 5-1 victory in the 11th annual Greater Austin Area All-Star Softball Game.
After stealing third, Moore tried to score on a sacrifice, but was thrown out by centerfielder Amanda Ruiz, of Hays, and was tagged out by none other than Bastrop’s Brittany French to end the inning with a double play.
Moore thought she slid under the tag,
“I was safe. I know I was safe,” Moore said.
French, however, has a different perspective.
“I got her before she got in,” she said.
While the debate was all in fun, the three players representing Bastrop County in the annual all-star game said the experience was one they will never forget.
“I have played against these girls for a really long time and it was nice to finally play with them,” Moore said. “I got to play with a lot of good girls and now I know I can hang with them.”
In her only inning on the mound, Mundine struggled a little, giving up two doubles and a run while facing four batters.
Mundine said she felt she was off, but enjoyed playing with her catcher Brittany French one last time.
“I was just glad to play with Brittany. We will still be playing in the alumni game together, but this was special,” Mundine said. “I wasn’t really on. I haven’t pitched from 43 feet in a while, but I kept my composure and I am happy that I am not done with softball.”
After Mundine’s inning on the mound, she entered the outfield, where she stayed for the final two innings.
Moore and French also finished out the game on the field.
“This was a great experience and I had a lot of fun,” French said. “I’d definitely do it again if I had the chance.”
