Josiah Monroe is helping put Bastrop on the map in Central Texas.
While his acceptance speech for the Bastrop football Hall of Fame is years away from being written, Monroe is leaving a legacy and elevating Bastrop football into the elite among Central Texas.
Head coach Gerald Perry had a hard time finding non-district opponents for the upcoming season because schools didn’t want to have to defend Bastrop’s slippery  athlete, who had the best game of his two-year career against one of Texas’ most storied programs — Westlake.
Monroe threw for 273 yards and rushed for 64 more as his three touchdown passes lifted the Bears to a 24-21 victory over the heavily favored Chaparrals.
It was Bastrop’s first victory over Westlake since 1976 and made Monroe a superstar in Central Texas.
With Monroe as quarterback, Bastrop won their first district title in eight years and returned to the playoffs after posting a 3-17 overall record the previous two seasons.
His football awards are accumulating rapidly.
He was the 2009 District 25-5A Most Valuable Player and Bastrop County Player of the Year.
In 2008, Monroe was the district’s Newcomer of the Year and Bastrop County Offensive Player of the Year.
He enters his senior season as one of the Top 300 recruits in Texas and reportedly has scholarship offers on the table from Stephen F. Austin and UT-San Antonio.
In basketball, Monroe is 255 points shy of scoring 2,000 career points.
He and fellow guard Jordan Roach had Bastrop in the playoff picture until the last game of the season.
Monroe has won the last two Bastrop County Offensive Player of the Year honors and  is a two-time all-district selection.
With a move into Class 4A for his senior season, expectations are high for both the boys basketball and football teams.
