Lebron James didn’t let us down and proved what most of us always suspected — Lebron James is all about Lebron James.
Every sports fan needs that one athlete they love to see lose. In one national TV special on ESPN, James went from being one of the most loved players to that guy in one swift announcement.
Coincidently, Kobe Bryant went from being one of the most hated to one of the most loved since I am pretty sure Miami is now the most despised team in the NBA.
Now that Lebron has made his self-absorbed decision, we can move on and start focusing on football.
But as long as the Cincinnati Reds are in first place in the National League Central, baseball will have to share some of my attention.
The Reds, however, probably won’t disappoint me and should start their post-all-star-break collapse any day now.
Hey, it’s just part of being a Reds fan.
Luckily for me, I have a chance to get my football fix on Tuesday and I would encourage all of Bastrop to travel the two hours to the Alamodome and cheer on Auston Shipley in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football Game.
The game is part of the three day coaching school that signifies the unofficial start of the football season.
Coaches have a week before two-a-day practices begin on Aug. 2 after coaching school is completed.
For Elgin, Smithville and Cedar Creek, football season will begin on that almost certain hot Monday morning.
Bastrop, since it conducts spring drills, will have to wait until Aug. 9 to haul out the footballs and tackling dummies.
The Bears will play a scrimmage at Lake Travis on Aug. 20 and that should be a lot of fun to watch.
The scrimmage will feature two of the best quarterbacks in Central Texas: Bastrop’s Josiah Monroe and Lake Travis’ Michael Brewer.
And speaking of the two field generals, both will be on the cover of the Austin Community Newspapers’ Central Texas Football Guide cover that hits newsstands Aug. 5.
But I digress.
This season will be a change for the Wildcats, who didn’t have spring football drills for the first time since head coach Danny Lauve arrived in 2007.
Lauve, who will field another young Elgin team in the fall, will get the benefit of two scrimmages before the season begins on Aug. 27.
There are different debates about whether or not spring practices are beneficial, but the math indicates that 18 practices in the spring as opposed to the extra five you get in the fall if you don’t have spring drills makes it better.
I don’t know … you be the judge this fall.
One thing I am most looking forward too is seeing my first Smithville game this fall.
In my two years of covering football in Bastrop County, I have never been able to attend a Tigers game due to scheduling conflicts with Bastrop.
This season, it looks as though I might actually get out to Barry Field and watch the Tigers on Sept. 3 when they host Wharton or Oct. 29 when they host Navasota.
On another note, for those ladies that want to educate themselves about football so they know more than their boyfriend or husband, Bastrop will host a football clinic for women on July 29 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Bastrop High School cafeteria. The clinic is free and open to all women. Anyone interested should RSVP by calling (512) 772-7810.
