Community chats and upcoming projects
The first of this year’s community chats was held recently at the Shiloh Community
Center. Sheriff Terry Pickering, Lt. A. J. Molinari, Commissioner Willie Piña and County Treasurer Kathy Schroeder provided updates to the group. The officials addressed concerns citizens had in their community – road conditions, safety, patrol schedules and budgetary allotments.
Pickering explained to the group the department staffing and also how citizens could assist the sheriff’s department in providing support to the neighborhood. Molinari talked about how neighborhood patrols are scheduled. Piña explained the boundaries of his precinct and how money is allocated to each precinct. Schroeder detailed her duties as county treasurer to the group.
Overall, the citizens seemed pleased with the comments and several issues were resolved. I am hoping for more meetings like this where county officials meet with citizens and answer their concerns. To schedule a similar meeting in your area, contact Nicole Bower in my office at (512) 332-7201 or email her at nicole.bower@co.bastrop.tx.us .
Two projects
There are two upcoming projects within the county. The Bastrop County Cup Challenge is being held in the new Cedar Creek Park in the fall. This competition will allow employees from Bastrop County to compete for the first County Cup. The competition features basketball, flag football, sand volleyball, soccer, softball power hitting, a seven-iron golf swing, a 3K Trail Run and a special Texas History Trivia Challenge.
This project ties in with our wellness and fitness initiative. It allows county employees an opportunity to share in a friendly competition and test their physical and mental agility as well. For more details on the first annual Bastrop County Cup Challenge, contact Rick Breare at (512) 321-3994 or email him at rick.breare@co.bastrop.tx.us.
The second program is the Lost Pines Christmas event that is being held Dec.10-12 in Bastrop. The weekend will feature many exciting events, including the Lighted Christmas Parade, the homes tour, an open house for the new Bastrop City Hall, events at the Bastrop Opera House and the annual lighting of the courthouse Christmas tree.
This year’s lighting of the county Christmas tree promises to be a grand event. I am inviting choirs, singers, musicians and entertainers from the county to participate in the program. We want to showcase Bastrop County talent and enjoy the holiday spirit on Friday, Dec.10 at the county courthouse. The event is being promoted throughout the state and many visitors are expected to come explore Bastrop County that weekend.
If you or your group would like to participate, please contact Dock Jackson in my office at (512) 332-7201 or email him at dock.jackson@co.bastrop.tx.us. I hope to make this an annual event with full county participation, so please make sure your city, community and/or neighborhood is included in this county-wide celebration.
For any other concerns or issues, please contact me in my office or Gayle Wilhelm at (512) 332-7201 or email her at Gayle.Wilhelm@co.bastrop.tx.us. We are always available to assist the citizens of Bastrop County and welcome your input.

Interesting how Saturday’s paper only had 1/2 page of Letters to the Editor which consisted of this article and a letter from the CEO of the Family Crisis Center.
Since Ms. Wright has publicly announced her support for the proposed Bastrop ACC campus, was this to keep opposition letters out of the paper for a while?
It is my understanding that anyone can write a letter to the editor, whetehr for or against any issue. If there are no letters in opposition, perhaps it is because no-one has written one lately. Why don’t you write one, seeking? Afraid to use your real name perhaps?
I’m excited to hear about the Wellness program tie-in to the County Cup. As the cost of healthcare continues to soar, these initiatives to get or keep our public servants healthy is a wise choice to save tax payer dollars.
Our business is saving a lot of money with smoking cessation and wellness events and I’m glad to see this happening in the public sector.
Keep up the great work!
Advertiser Policy Sensorship??
A group of the citizens in Bastrop are doing research and has amazed a lot of information on ACC but I would imagine since the Advertiser is limiting letters, these people will not be writing until they feel the time is right. Timing their opinions so that the letter is published close to election time. It is a form of sensorship. I would prefer that there is more free press but Wrights policy is what we have to live with in Bastrop. Reading the opinion page use to be the highlight of Saturday. No more, no need to go buy the paper as debate is the most interesting part of the Advertiser and local social news is ho hum. I think the paper could quit hard copy printing and just go on line.
Cyndi the letters to the Editor are the best part of the paper and you have stopped them.
