It’s a state championship or bust for the Tribe Consolidated Warriors.
After two tries at a Texas Christian Athletic League (T-CAL) six-man football state championship fell short, anything short of holding the state title at the end of the season will be a disappointment for head coach Billy Helm.
“We are going to win it all,” Helm said. “We are stronger than we have ever been and a lot more solid. The commitment of these guys is tremendous and it’s going to pay off this season.”
Helm began the Tribe Consolidated athletic program, which is for kids at Covenant Christian Academy or those being home schooled.
The Warriors, who are coming off their second straight trip to the state championship game, believe that it’s finally their time.
A big part of that is 6-foot-4, 210 pound wide receiver Isaiah Tyler, who is one of five returning starters on offense.
Tyler had 1,537 yards of total offense and scored 32 touchdowns last season and Helm said he’s an bigĀ part to the team, but everyone is going to touch the football this season.
“Isaiah is in his prime and he’s going to have a big year, but there will be times he’s a decoy,” Helm said. “All six of our players on offense will touch the football.”
The Warriors open their season Thursday against San Antonio Radiance, the team that defeated them in the 2008 state championship game.
