AUSTIN — Elgin head coach Hollie Smith-Huston got a good idea of where her team is as the Lady Cats closed out the Westwood Tournament with a two-set loss to district rival Hutto.
Hutto eliminated Elgin 32-30, 25-21 on Saturday, but Smith-Huston was pleased that her team competed with some of the best teams in the state.
The bright spots came from the play of Ashley Frederick and Kelsey Harkins, who each recorded 24 kills in eight games.
Harkins also had 37 digs and six blocks while Frederick had 28 digs, six blocks and five aces.
Frederick’s key game came against host Westwood, where the senior led Elgin with nine kills and seven digs.
Harkins played consistent throughout the tournament, but had her key game in Elgin’s 25-21, 25-20 win over Denton Guyer.
Junior Shelbi Swenson also was consistent with her tournament-high 42 digs to go with 15 kills, six blocks and eight aces.
Other key players for Elgin were Hillary Adams (19 kills, 13 blocks), Alyssa Wilkins (13 kills, 7 digs, 4 blocks), Kelsey Markham (19 kills, 26 digs, 6 aces, 59 assists) and Morgan Schultz (5 aces, 45 assists).
Elgin will be off over the weekend before traveling to Caldwell Tuesday to take on the 2009 Class 3A semifinalist.
