Volleyball roundup: Thorndale tops Cedar Creek; Bastrop falls to Hyde Park

CEDAR CREEK — The Thorndale Lady Bulldogs exposed Cedar Creek’s weaknesses and used them for a quick 25-8, 25-14, 25-18 victory over the Lady Eagles at Eagle Gym.
Cedar Creek struggled with their passing and service return as Class 1A powerhouse Thorndale shell-shocked the Lady Eagles in the first set.
Cedar Creek did manage to regroup and take a 6-0 lead to open the second set, but the Lady Bulldogs didn’t let that last too long.
“The girls are working really hard and improving every game they play,” said head coach Krystal Hacker. “We have to focus on our service receiving and making better passes.”
Libero Nicole Parnell had a good night, with three digs, two service aces and a kill.
Offensively, Joelle Foster, Tori Kluting and Elaine Escobedo had two kills each with Foster recording a team-high four digs.
Defensively, Foster also had a team-high four digs and Kluting and Escobedo each had one block.
The Lady Eagles will host Del Valle (5A) Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Hyde Park def. Bastrop
AUSTIN — TAPPS volleyball power Hyde Park Baptist defeated Bastrop 25-23, 25-18, 26-24 Tuesday night in Austin.
The Lady Bears (4-4) had strong nights offensively from Hillari Raemsch and Raven Barnett, who recorded eight kills each.
Raemsch also contributed a team-high 16 digs, two blocks and four aces.
Barnett had four digs, a block and one ace.
Shelby McWhorter had three kills and two digs while Rachel Clardy led the team with 20 assists.
Bastrop will travel to San Marcos Tuesday to take on the Lady Rattlers.
New Braunfels def. Elgin
DRIPPING SPRINGS — The New Braunfels Lady Unicorns began a tough night for Elgin Tuesday by sweeping the Lady Cats 25-16, 25-16, 25-14 in the first game of a tri-match with Dripping Springs.
Elgin struggled offensively with errors, committing 20 attacking errors with just 21 total kills.
Hillary Adams led Elgin with six kills in the match while Kelsey Harkins and Kelsey Markham each had 11 digs. Libero Kaci Olson had six digs to go with one ace.
Shelbi Swenson had four kills, four digs and two aces against New Braunfels.
Dripping Springs def. Elgin
DRIPPING SPRINGS — Elgin’s second match in the dual didn’t go that well either.
Dripping Springs swept the Lady Cats 26-24, 26-24, 25-11.
Elgin’s hitting improved, but still wasn’t what it was as 14 attacking errors doomed the Lady Cats again.
Kelsey Harkins led Elgin with five kills while Kelsey Markham added four to go with her team-high 10 digs and two service aces.
Hillary Adams, Ashley Frederick and Shelbi Swenson each added three kills while Swenson added nine digs.
Kaci Olson led Elgin defensively with 11 digs and Adams had five blocks.
The Lady Cats (3-7) will take on Caldwell, a 2009 Class 3A state semifinalist, Tuesday on the road.
Schulenburg def. Smithville
The Smithville Lady Tigers fell to Schulenburg Tuesday 25-15, 25-11, 25-14 despite strong defensive performances by Brittany Shackelford and Colline Morrell.
Schackelford recorded six digs in the loss while Morrell and Audri Rodgers each had one.
Lindsy Carver led the Lady Tigers offensively with five kills while Taylor Weldon added three.
Smithville will travel to Gonzalez on Tuesday.
