AUSTIN — Senior DE Austin Cash walked out with his team after sustaining a broken leg during a scrimmage a week ago and was an honorary captain.
An emotional Elgin Wildcats’ football team took a 14-7 lead at halftime, but lost to Travis 24-21 Friday night at House Park Stadium.
Elgin capped off a 70-yard drive to open the game with quarterback Dylan Scott running in a 10-yard touchdown to put Elgin up 7-0 early in the game.
The Wildcats (0-1) scored again 48 seconds into the second quarter when Scott found Marquis Campbell for a short touchdown pass. An extra point by Dalton Kisamore made it 14-0.
Travis finally broke through Elgin’s defense to score with 30 seconds left in the first half.
The Rebels (1-0) opened the second half by returning a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to tie the game.
Momentum stayed with Travis, which took the lead midway through the third quarter on a touchdown run by quarterback Johnathan Sterling.
Travis added a field goal after the Wildcats’ defense held the rebels in the red zone.
Scott tried to charge Elgin back and connected with Damian Sibley for a 20-yard touchdown toss to bring the Wildcats to within three points.
Elgin’s defense gave Scott another chance to win the game, but the senior quarterback was picked off to seal the 24-21 win for The Rebels.

Del Valle had scrimmage Travis, and I have to admit that Travis was able to score on DV defense, Travis has a really good team this year, they might be the sleeper their district, and maybe win it.
