ROUND ROCK – Cooper Lewis ran for 55 yards and scored two touchdowns in the second half as the McNeil Mavericks defeated Bastrop 22-20 Friday at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Round Rock.
Lewis tallied 86 yards rushing as McNeil (1-0) ran for 144 yards in the second half on the Bears’ defense, but only had 92 at halftime.
Bastrop had no trouble moving the ball in the first half as Josiah Monroe threw two of his three touchdown passes early to give Bastrop a 13-3 lead at halftime.
It was a much different story as Cameron Smith and the Mavericks’ defense kept Bastrop’s offense off the field for most of the half.
The Bears (0-1) had just two of six possessions where they didn’t go three-and-out.
Monroe, who had 244 yards of offense, had 136 passing yards in the first half.
His first touchdown was to Buddy Nunn, a 25-yard toss to the back of the endzone.
His second came early in the second quarter when he hit D.J. Gains for an 11-yard score to give Bastrop a 13-0 lead with nine minutes in the first half.
McNeil finally got on the scoreboard with 14 seconds left in the half when Chase Naylor connected on a 35-yard field goal.
