TYLER — Two weeks before opening District 16-4A play against one another, Bastrop and Elgin went up against some of their toughest competition to date over the weekend.
The Lady Bears (5-11) traveled to Tyler and went 1-4, with their only win coming against New Boston.
Bastrop got a great weekend out of senior outside hitter Shelby McWhorter, who had seven kills and 10 digs in the win.
McWhorter finished the tournament with 10 kills, 60 digs, four blocks and 10 service aces. She also had a team-high hitting percentage of .233.
Raven Barnett also had a big tournament, finishing with 41 kills, 64 digs, two blocks and seven service aces.
Other highlights were Hillari Raemsch’s 17 kills and 22 digs along with freshman Addison Semer’s 11 kills and four blocks.

Elgin
The Elgin Lady Cats continued their brutal schedule over the weekend against some of Dallas’ best programs at the Coppell Tournament.
Elgin (3-13) played four teams that went at least three-rounds deep in the playoffs, including Class 5A Amarillo Tascosa, Plano West and Arlington.
“I could never have anticipated such a tough schedule, but the kids are fighting hard and trying new things to make it work,” said head coach Hollie Smith-Huston. “I am also proud of my leadership from my captains.”
