CEDAR CREEK — The “Josiah Monroe Show” continued this week as he slithered his way to 356 yards of offense to lead Bastrop to a 63-7 win over the Akins Eagles Friday at BISD Memorial Stadium.
Monroe, who has accumulated 773 yards of offense and 10 touchdowns in two games, started early with a 16-yard touchdown toss to Josh Taylor in the first quarter to start the Bears’ blowout.
Monroe tossed two more TD passes, both to junior D.J. Gaines, while running in a 55-yard touchdown to put Bastrop up 28-0 with 1:27 left in the first half.
Bastrop (2-1) kept up the momentum and put 14 more points on the scoreboard before halftime on a 1-yard touchdown by Mark Jackson and an 80-yard interception return by Glenn Miller at the halftime buzzer.
Gaines finished the night impressing the Bastrop faithful with three total touchdowns, including a 13-yard rushing score in the third quarter, to go with his 127 offensive yards.
Marcus Reed found the endzone late in the third quarter to add more to Akins’ (0-3) troubles and sent the Eagles into the fourth quarter down 56-0.
Akins finally got onto the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter when Kenny Davis found Shawn Whitely in the endzone for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Sophomore Paul Whitmill scored from 48-yards out for Bastrop’s final score. Taylor finished as Bastrop’s leading receiver with six catches for 103 yards.
Bastrop will travel to San Marcos next week to take on the Rattlers at Bobcat Stadium.
