CEDAR CREEK — Mistakes, miscues, penalties and one big ejection led to Bastrop suffering its first loss ever at BISD Memorial Stadium.
Bryan-Rudder shocked Bastrop 27-21 Friday night after Bastrop had seven fumbles — losing four — and one interception.
Rudder capitalized on two fumbles on special teams for touchdowns late in the second half to build a 27-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
The biggest hit for the Bears (3-2, 0-1 District 16-4A) came with 1:03 left in the first half when star quarterback Josiah Monroe was ejected for punching a Rudder player in the helmet in frustration after a sack.
The Rangers (5-1, 1-1) had six sacks on Bastrop’s offense and held the Bears to just 158 yards of offense.
Bastrop’s offense struggled without Monroe with just one offensive touchdown after his ejection and only 44 yards of offense.
The Bears scored two touchdowns in the second half that included a 92-yard kickoff return by Mustafa Akbar and a 64-yard touchdown pass to Buddy Nunn from backup quarterback D.J. Gaines.
Penalties also hurt Bastrop.
The Bears were called for 10 total penalties for 87 yards to go with their four turnovers.
Mark Jackson scored the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter with a 1-yard run with 8:57 left on the clock.
Rudder answered with a 10 play drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Tre Hammond.
Bastrop held Rudder to just 242 yards of offense, but 21 of the Rangers’ points came off Bastrop turnovers.
The Bears will try to rebound from the loss Friday against Manor while Rudder is off.

The “Mastermind” has a dilemma on his hands.
The Mastermind, A.K.A. athletic director/head football coach Gerald Perry has to determine what,if any punishent he will have to levy on his star quarterback after being ejected for punching an opponent in Friday nights contest.
As the Bastrop Faithful will recall, Athletic director Perry ended the season of a pair of LadyBear soccer players last season. The reason for the dismissals have yet to be made completely public but according to media accounts it was due to a team meltdown after a loss. These young ladies were not suspended for a game or two, they were given the death sentence- off the team. No chance to return. The punishment seemed excessive at the time for what was an after the game incident that did not involve the other team. The incident with the quarterback on Friday night would be considered assault anywhere besides the confines of the gridiron.
So… The Mastermind is now in a position in which he must administer some form of punishment to his star quarterback. This will of course be much different as its football, not soccer and it’s a team he coaches. Due to the nature of the violation, will Mr. Perry dismiss the kid from the team and put his season in doubt? My guess is no but if no action is taken it will become very clear that Mr. Perry does not conduct a level playing field in regards to how he disciplines the students athletes in all sports.
The “Mastermind” has a dilemma on his hands and all of Bastrop is watching.
This is different. The two soccer girls were dismissed by their soccer coach. He was backing that coach’s decision. This choice is his to make but it cannot be compared to last year’s decision. Young people make mistakes. They have to live with the consequences. Gut check time for Perry. In a school that touts “Character Education”, it will be interesting.
I am afraid I don’t see the difference . Mr. Perry is in charge of ALL sports and he could have reinstated those girls but choose not to. It’s interesting to note that the rogue coach he stuck his neck out for is long gone. Does anyone wonder why she bolted to a 3A school? We will probably never know…
Apparently this ejection is being viewed as a “personal foul”. ..
No harm, no real foul and time to get after Manor!
really!?! do you really think he will make the kid miss ANY GAME time..
OOH NO! not at all.. he will say, the kid was thrown out of the game, refs call… that was enough.. just like a kid that gets 2 tech. in a bkb game.. you are out.. thats it.. so thats why its up to the schools..
ALSO, His entire game plan is built around that ONE KID.. sooooooo.. he will play for sure..
i say, no more will happen.. i don’t even know why its being spoken about..
of course this is IMHO.. so no telling!! not matter what he does.. some will back him.. others will NOT.. Bastrop.. its what we do here .. LOL
It is interesting to see where priorities are. The star gets kicked out of a football game and the discussion immediately shifts from ACC to football. Where did all the ACC discussion go?
Again, you folks have no clue. Rudder was going after Monroe below the belt the whole night. I think they were intentionally trying to hurt him. The last and final attack on Monroe was again hit below the belt. What person wouldn’t get frustrated? Nobody really knows what happened after the fact except for the coach, the player, and the official. Plus, the soccer situation was totally different because if you read about that, that one game wasn’t the only incident that took place.
I think it’s okay to have two discussions at once.
Star says we have no clue. Fascinating. I think maybe it’s Star that might be clueless as you see, football is a contact sport. The quarterback knows this as well as his coach. If you have ever watched a football game you will note that the ball carrier can be brought to the ground by ANY means beside the face mask or leg whipping. The quarterback in Friday night’s contest got sacked. His frustration overcame him and he punched the defender. His actions rightfully got him ejected from the game. His ejection cost the Bears a win most likely. Discipline and control are the cornerstones to a winning football team on any level. This said, if the Mastermind allows this to slide, he is basically saying it’s okay for any athelete to behave in an unsportsmanlike manner and brush it off as a personal foul.
Now, maybe Star has some information in regards to the soccer situation that would cause two players to be dismissed without being at least suspended first? Remember, gossip and rumors will make you look foolish.
Mr. Calhoun you sound like a disgruntled man that doesn’t have better things to do with your life other than picking on high school students. It sounds to me you need to get a life or grow up.
Also, Mr. Calhoun no I don’t have any information regarding the outcome of the soccer players but it doesn’t take an idiot to know something else happened to get them thrown off the team. Not one action should get a person thrown off the team, it has to take more than one.
Let me add this. My son plays on the Freshman team. In last weeks game against Rudder one of his teammates took his helmet off and slammed it on the ground (Same thing Monroe did after thrown an interception against Rudder) out of frustration. He was pulled out for the rest of the game by the coach. He also is not allowed to play in this weeks game or even ride on the bus with his teammates to the field. Monroe not only punched a player from the other team, but also slams his helmet on the ground (Which should not be allowed in my opinion) repeatedly with no punishment. I understand he is a great player and the team really needs him, but fair is fair and Coach Perry needs to step up and do something.
