MANOR — In a game that lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours, Josiah Monroe responded to last week’s ejection with five touchdowns and 307 yards of offense as Bastrop defeated Manor 59-42 Friday at Mustang Stadium.
It wasn’t just Monroe that made a statement.
Bastrop (4-2, 1-1 District 16-4A) rebounded as a team after surprisingly falling to Bryan-Rudder last week as to say the Bears are still a part of the 16-4A championship picture.
The Bears defense held the Mustangs to just 71 rushing yards and 185 passing yards with 47 of those coming late in the fourth quarter after Bastrop built a 59-28 lead.
Manor struck first on a 9-yard pass from Reginald Middleton to Statron Jones early in the first quarter.
Monroe and Bastrop answered with 21 unanswered points, 14 coming from touchdowns by the Bears’ senior star quarterback.
Bastrop carried a 31-14 lead into the locker room after a 6-yard touchdown run by Monroe and a 36-yard field goal by Hart McMillan.
The Mustangs (4-3, 1-2) came out firing in the second half thanks to back-to-back touchdown runs by Corey Richardson of one and 17 yards, respectively.
But Monroe and Bastrop wasn’t finished and scored another 21 unanswered points to go up 59-28 with 7:18 left in the game.
L.D. Williams insisted on keeping things interesting and threw two touchdown passes, one to Javante Taylor for 10 yards and another to Terrian Williams for 37 yards to pull the Mustangs to within 17.
Bastrop’s defense, however, wasn’t letting anything slip away from them as the Bears held on for the win.
Friday’s win marked the fourth time Bastrop’s offense has scored 50 or more points in a game.
Bastrop will host Hendrickson next week as Manor will travel to Bryan-Rudder.

Good sportsmanship on Perry`s behalf. But 42 pt`s., i think is too many , no matter what. I know Perry is offense coach, but i think he shoud put some input into def. I know he is a football coach & knows how to run a defense. Please, they need a lot of help this week especially.
James is right.
Defense needs to be top priority – also a lot of penalities
cost points – guys need to focus on basics. GO BEARS !!!
I agree Warren, checked stats page in paper this morning, & Hendrickson has only thrown for 200 yd`s. all season. Bastrop`s penalties is of concern to. Almost 100 yd`s. a game. That won`t do it Friday night.
Defense did thier job, Perry made a smart move by putting in the backup QB for som reps, and he did it when the game was basically in the bag. He had control all along. A win is a win, the real score was 59 to 28, thats when we started our backup QB who had not seen varsity football before, he needs exp. With what happened last time, they now realize how important it is to have a backup plan that is ready for action.
If he had left Josiah in we would have had more offense and Manor would have seen less offense therefore less chances of scoring, plus our defense would have a chance to rest, therefore moving on the ball quicker and harder. Get it?
Now, if Perry didn’t make the right choice and the backup never got any actual playing time, he would play very poorly if the time came to put him. Then you all would be crying about how bad the offense was. Stop crying, we won and got some experience out of it for our back up QB as well. This is not the NFL, but we have to learn something from them, you get a new backup, you give him some playing time if you get a nice lead on the opposition. It’s not about how many points you can beat them by, its getting the win and then squeezing all you can in preperation for the next game to get the win again.
The game was never in risk after we hit 59 points…. Get it..?
A win is a win.
I wonder if football coaches these days know the meaning of “spying” or “keying” on one player. You put one ,maybe two players in position to hit keyed player every play, especially a running back. He has to run ball or block, you can hit him & let him know he is a had man. Nothing dirty, but that`show you make him know he is for a game.
What i meant to say was, it will show him he is not going to be the guy to beat you.
I see where Coach Patmon has called for a blackout for Game Friday. OUR SCHOOL COLORS ARE MAROON & WHITE !! Don`t know where new coaching staff got that there is black in our team colors. MAROON & WHITE!!!!!!!!!
Cry me a river…Its been this way for 2 years. No one complained when they won district last year!
Vince, i said it was a good move. I`m just trying to say they are not playing Manor or Elgin this week. It just seems Def. is not well prepared. If they keep up with that pooch kick crap, they are giving up 40 yd`s. of field position every time. Make them earn every yard. I guess you have heard a guy named Kenny Williams. They have to stack line & contain outside & let QB try & beat you. He`s only thrown for 200 yd`s. all season. Yea ,i`l cry, MAROON &WHITE since Bastrop started playing football.
I am not the James that made the above statements, but James Froncek believes the D-Line, linebackers will surprise alot of people tonight. Believe that Hendrickson will pass more tonight that any time this season, because they have to. Bastrop by 14 and Patmon rules!
Fair weather fans are all over the state. Win a district championship and its all praise. Lose a couple of games and its knit-picking time. Come on james…I know you’re a Bear fan, but lets not start whining about school colors. If asking fans to wear black to motivate and unite, so be it. What ever it takes! Great job Bears against the Hawks. Continue to work hard. Respect all, fear no one.
Never in the history of any sporting event has wearing a “color” made a hoot difference in the outcome of a game. Kind of like cheerleading and drill teams.
Dan i agree if they want to change colors, mascot, split the town by building another school, whatever it takes right. I say there is no limit. Bear pride or whatever mascot they want to use pride.
