GAME OF THE WEEK
Bastrop at Connally

at Cougar Stadium, Austin (7:30 p.m.)
Records: Class 4A Bastrop is 5-2, 2-1 in District 16; Class 4A Connally is 7-0, 3-0 in District 16.
Last Week: Bastrop def. Hendrickson 35-21, Connaly def. Hutto 29-25
Last meeting: Bastrop defeated Connally 23-19 in 2009.
Prediction: Bastrop by 3

BREAKDOWN
OFFENSE

This is almost a no-brainer. Bastorp averages 41 points and 404 yards of offense per game. Connally averages 362 yards and 36 points per game. Josiah Monroe is the difference maker.
Advantage: Bastrop

DEFENSE
Bastrop stopped Hendrickson’s Kenny Williams in his tracks, holding him to just 2.7 yards per carry. Connally’s defense averages five points fewer allowed than Bastrop’s does. Depending on which Bastrop defense shows up will make the difference.
Advantage: Even

INTANGIBLES
Connally has home-field advantage, but Bastrop’s defense is coming off a huge week, as are the Cougars. Winner will control the district race and Connally is sure to remember last year’s loss to Bastrop.
Advantage: Connally

OVERALL
The defense will have to come up big against another big-time running back. Monroe will put up points. If the defense duplicates it’s performance last week, this is Bastrop’s game to lose.
Advantage: Bastrop

I’m sure Connally will find this to be good bulletin board material.
‘Bastrop’s game to lose’? Really? That one sided is it? We’ll see on Friday night.

Touting the D stats vs Williams is a cleaver way to distort the picture. Sure Williams only ran 10 times for 27 yds. but Daje Johnson picked up 113 yds on only 9 carries or 12.5 YPC vs Bastrop.
Total rushing yds for Hendrickson were 199 on 31 carries for a6.4 ypc average.

How does that stack up for Hendrickson vs Connally?

Williams got 83 yds on 15 carries for a 5.5 ypc average
Daje Jonshon got 28 yds on7 carries for a 4 ypc average
Total yds rushing for Hendrickson 104 on 30 carries for an average of 3.46 ypc.

    Advantage: Connally

  2. Ralph Walker says:

Bastrop defense cannot stop Connally air or run game. One player can not beat a whole team that is united and strong against the run. All year no one has pick Connally. Bastrop has two losses and a single threat on offense. Their defense is suspect.

I predict Connally will win by 2 two touchdowns.

  3. Vince says:

The only reason Bastrop lost the game against Rudder is because Monroe was kicked out of the game before the half. Everyone there knows that, even the Rudder peeps. Don’t know how they could hold thier heads up knowing the officials gave them a win on a silver platter. But oh well, some peeps will take them as they can.
Bastrop’s only real loss was due to the team settling in with new players replacing the last years stars that went on to college with full rides. Ex. Benard Blake…among others.

Connally will get thier first loss tomorrow and everyone will get back on the Bears band wagon to the playoffs. Lake Travis is the team that better watch out. We showed them what we could do at the scrimmage. They were pretty surprised.

Connally can’t stop a real passing game and our defense is still to be feared by all. We beat them last year, we will beat them again.
Not much has changed in our team. Not enough to give Connally a chance to beat us, that is for sure.

  4. james says:

Bastrop has more than one player. Monroe has more down field threats than he did last year. Running game is a lot better than last year, also. Bastrop could have put at least 2 more TD`s on Hendrickson. Instead, ran about 8 min`s. off clock infinal quarter. Best coaching job all season. Bastrop 35-14. See ya Friday. GO BEARS!!!!!!

  5. james says:

Interesting, Connally fans getting on opposing teams web site. Getting a little paranoid are we?

  6. Tommy says:

where else you going to talk to the opposition fans? Duh!

Bastrop clearly has a great team. Anyone expecting to play the same caliber team that Connally fielded the past 2-3 years is in for a surprise.

  7. james says:

i repeat for about the 100th time, no punch was thrown. Monroe was booted from game for jawing with the ref. Case closed. Does not matter ,Bastrop wins out & takes district.

  8. Vince says:

    Bastrop 42
    Connally 27
    Final
What was that again? Tommy, Ralph..don;t expect you have much to say now right? Like I said, Lake Travis better watch out, here come the Bears…we own 4A now!

  9. James Froncek says:

Not the James above. I predicted a Bastrop WIN by 1o points earlier today over Connally. Bastrop exceesed that. A team has jelled, offense/defense as one. The Rudder game was lost due to the Bastrop punter on 2 plays. Not the QB, my prediction last week was spot on. Adams its a TEAM, start recognizing it as such, credit by name the D-Boys that produce. failure to do so is hurtful to those players.

  10. Tommy says:

Clearly Bastrop played better and deserved the win. However, you got able assistance from the refs who absolutely blew the call on Defee’s touchdown that wasn’t at the end of the first half. Connally gave away points – too cute trying for the 2 pt conversion after the fumble that lead to the first score. Running the ball down Bastrop’s throat and then going for a TD pass when the Bears had no answer for Defee? Stupid 4th down call at midfield to give Bastrop another scoring opportunity in 1st half which, to their credit, they capitilized on. That’s the breaks, Bastrop capitilized on their turnovers and Connally did not. Intercept in the end zone then give the ball back. You can’t win against a good team if you shoot yourself in the foot. Connally’s poor pass defense sealed the deal. How you play 10 yds off #19 especially after he’s obviously the focus I don’t know. Bastrop is good, but not unbeatable. Clearly. The defense ‘jelled”? They couldn’t stop the run all night long. Defee had 177 yds rushing. Congrats on a well played game. Your team deserved the win.

  11. bears fan says:

we really should thank Connallys coaching staff when they tried to bring the sophomore QB in and he fumbles and the refs for not calling the touchdown right before halftime im just telling the truth had they not switched QB it could have been a totaly different game coaching like that kills a teams spirit.

  12. Bear fan #2 says:

Ball has to hit the pylon for it to be a touchdown. I don’t think the ball ever did. Lesson to be learned here: Don’t slow down at the 5 yd. line. Great hustle by the DB (Froncek)

  13. Class of 87 says:

Tommy it’s sad to hear you complain about a specific no call, that you think was blown. Maybe, just maybe that same official that marked Defee down at the 1 yard line had a guilty conscious for not throwing the flag on a blatant block in the back at the 15 yard line. So, the calls wash out and the score remains 42-27

  14. RE: Tommy says:

    RE: Tommy

    1. Running down our throats huh? Bunton’s 76 yard run must have been hard to swallow. That was embarrasing.

    2. Woulda Should,a Coulda, sounds like uncle Rico

    3. Connally did not lose to mistakes only, they were out hustled, out prepared, out matched on speed and talent and most of all out coached. We also made mistakes but came out victorious. There is no match to Batrop’s Football Program. Preparation, Talent and Hard Work.

    4. To be a Championship Team you must be a double or triple threat. Bunton on the ground, Nunn in the air and Monroe on the move.

    5. Defee was exactly where we wanted him “Out f the End Zone” hence the score. Just like hendrickson’s quote “start running back” was never a threat.

    6. I do agree we are not unbeatable, NO team is. However, that was never at question here. Point blank, there is NOT a team in this district that is good enough to beat us on a bad day, not even “Hutto”. However, we should see some better competition in the playoffs. We’ll see what they got.
