Buddy Nunn had been waiting for this moment since his sophomore year.
With Josh Taylor sidelined with a concussion, the senior wide receiver had his shining moment two years in the making.
Nunn caught 11 catches for a Bastrop and Central Texas season-high 265 yards last week in the Bears convincing 42-27 win over Connally.
“He is such a hard kid to bring down,” head coach Gerald Perry said. “He’s got great speed and is a deep threat for us. With Josh out, I think it forced Josiah (Monroe) to look more to his left and find Buddy on the outside.”
Up to this point, Bastrop has had a receiving corps by committee.
The Bears have had multiple receivers with more than one catch in six games, but twice has a receiver had over 100 yards before Nunn’s 265 on Friday.
Nunn has had to work hard to get here.
During his sophomore year, Nunn fractured his ankle which forced him to miss his entire junior season, which also has limited his recruiting.
Now, as Perry points out, Nunn has to prove himself each week in hopes that college scouts take notice.
He has 631 yards on 23 catches and is Bastrop’s third leading scorer with 42 points. He sits behind Josiah Monroe (194) and D.J. Gaines (50).
Nunn has led Bastrop in receiving in four games this season, three times in the last four. Three different receivers have led the Bears this season.
Nunn has taken over as Bastrop County and the Bears’ leading receiver and averages 27.4 yards per catch and 78.9 yards per game.
He said he’s just out to prove himself and make plays when needed.
“I have been waiting for this moment since I was injured,” Nunn said. “I was just out playing hard and trying to find the holes in (Connally’s) defense.”
It seemed as it was just a matter of time on Friday when Nunn finally broke out.
Only once in his first five catches did Nunn go for more than 15 yards. In his final six, he had five go for more than 15 yards.
His last three went for 41, 36 and 67 yards.
Taylor will be back this week , giving Monroe a second target and forcing Elgin’s defense to focus less on Nunn individually and more on Bastrop’s wide receivers as a group.

Is Buddy any relation to Chris Nunn that played for the Bears in the late 80’s?
