HUTTO — Kenny Williams couldn’t do it.
Neither could Da’Rick Nolan or Kenneth Defee.
Hutto’s Alondre Thorn, however, had no problem penetrating the Bastrop defense as the senior running back rushed for 171 yards on 12 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead Hutto to a 36-7 win over Bastrop Friday at Hippo Stadium.
The Hippos (9-1, 5-1 District 16-4A)  ran for 409 yards total, the most any team has gained against Bastrop.
“That was one of the best teams we have seen in our district,” said head coach Gerald Perry. “We just didn’t respond (to their running attack). It’s not that our kids didn’t try hard. We just didn’t make the plays tonight.”
Hutto’s win gave the Hippos a share of the District 16-4A and sends them into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed out of the district in Class 4A, Division II.
Bastrop will be the No. 2 seed out of the district and will play Corsicana in the first round of the playoffs Thursday at Waco Midway High School. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Hutto will play Mesquite Poteet Saturday at Waco Midway High School. That game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
“We have to go back to the drawing board (Saturday),” Perry said. “Main thing is to correct the mistakes. I know our kids and they will respond.”
Bastrop’s offense, which averaged 41 points and 411 yards per game, was held to its lowest point total of the season.
Prior to Friday, the Bears offense season-low was 20 points against McNeil in the season opener.
Hutto held Bastrop (7-3, 4-2) to just 270 yards and kept Josiah Monroe out of the endzone with the exception of a 43-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter.
Monroe and the Bears offense had a total 270 yards, with the senior quarterback accounting for 255 of those.
Monroe had 147 yards passing, completing 13-of-35 attempts while running for 108 yards.
He threw an uncharacteristic three interceptions after entering the game with just five on the season.
Monroe, however, did pass the 2,000 yard passing mark for the season and enters the playoffs with 2,079.
“We didn’t come out and play very well and that comes back on me,” Perry said. “(Hutto) played a great game and were well coached. You have to take your hats off to them.”
The loss kept Bastrop from repeating as district champions for the first time in 56 years.
It was Hutto’s first district championship since 2006 when the Hippos were still in Class 3A.
