WACO — Josiah Monroe had a game only digitized players on Madden could accomplish.
Monroe picked apart the Corsicana defense for 662 total yards with 6 TDs to lead Bastrop to a 55-34 win Thursday in the first playoff game ever played at Panther Stadium in Waco.
It was also Bastrop’s first playoff win since 2003.
“We are beat down and tired, but it’s a good feeling to know you can still practice on Monday,” said head coach Gerald Perry. “One of our goals was to practice on Thanksgiving and we are one win away from doing that.
“If you are practicing on Thanksgiving and playing that weekend you are a special team.”
Bastrop (8-3) will play Sulphur Springs, who defeated Jacksonville 56-50 Thursday, Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
Corsicana (7-4) took a 27-17 lead at halftime, thanks to 181 rushing yards by running back Cameron Washington, who on the first play of the game took it to the house with a 72-yard touchdown run.
Bastrop would put together a drive on its second possession, getting to the Tigers’ 9-yard-line before Monroe was picked off in the endzone.
That would be the start of some early troubles in the redzone for the Bears.
On its next possession, Bastrop again drove inside the Corsicana 10-yard-line, but had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Hart McMillan.
The Bears’ defense stopped Corsicana on fourth-and-one, but redzone issues again haunted Bastrop as Monroe failed to break the plane of the goal line on fourth down from the Corsicana 1-yard-line.
The Tigers then turned a pass interference call on Bastrop of a fake punt attempt on fourth down into seven more points as Washington scored on a 53-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 13-3 with 5:48 left in the first half.
Bastrop, however, took two plays, including a 32-yard-pass from Monroe to Buddy Nunn, to answer on a 16-yard run by Monroe.
Corsicana and Bastrop traded blows on the next three ensuing drives as the Tigers took a 27-17 lead at halftime. Corsicana out-gained Bastrop 328-279 in total offense.
But Bastrop’s defense would play lights out in the second half.
‘”Coach (Todd) Patmon talks to the defense separate from the offense, so I don’t know what he said,” Perry said. “Our defense played up-tempo the whole game. You have to give (the defense) credit. They buckled down when they had to.”
And buckle down the Bears did by holding Corsicana to just four yards of offense in the third quarter while Monroe and company put up 21 points.
Mustafa Akbar intercepted Corsicana quarterback Cameron Cutrer three times. Cutrer threw four interceptions in his first game in four weeks.
Bastrop  took its first lead of the game on a 98-yard drive that ended with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Monroe to Trae Bunton. The Bears started the drive on their own 2-yard-line after a 68-yard punt by the Tigers.
With a 38-27 lead going into the fourth quarter, McMillan added his second field goal of the game from 27 yards out to put the Bears up 41-27.
The Tigers wouldn’t go away, however, as Cutrer found Thomas McDonald for a 10-yard touchdown pass.
Bastrop, however, kept pouring it on, scoring two more times.
Monroe finished the game with a career-high 501 passing yards, completing 28-of-41 attempts.
“(Josiah) didn’t play very well against Hutto, so he was wanting to rectify that,” Perry said. “He’s a great competitor, but the people around him elevated their game as well. Those 500 yards were caught by people and the line protected him all night. It was a great effort all around.”
Josh Taylor led the Bears in receiving with five catches for 132 yards. Nunn ended the game with six catches for 98 yards while Mason Foytik also had six catches for 81 yards. Trae Bunton finished with 93 receiving yards.
