WACO — Mesquite Poteet continued to capitalize on its opponents’ mistakes, taking advantage of three first half Bastrop turnovers to end the Bears’ playoff run.
The Pirates defeated Bastrop 42-35 Saturday afternoon at Waco ISD Stadium.
Bastrop quarterback Josiah Monroe, who finished Saturday’s game with 623 yards of total offense, threw two interceptions and fumbled all in Poteet territory in the first half.
“(Poteet) had a good defensive scheme,” said head coach Gerald Perry. “They didn’t pass rush much… after we calmed (Josiah) down, he put together a nice comeback.”
After Bastrop (10-4) held Poteet to 4-and-out, Monroe was picked off by Trevon Jackson on the Bears’ first play of the game.
On the ensuing play, Chase Graham ran in a 58-yard touchdown to give Poteet (12-2) an early 7-0 lead.
Monroe and the Bears put together a drive that would eventually stall when Bastrop went for it on fourth down.
The Bears were 1-for-4 on fourth down conversitions in the first half.
After Bastrop’s second failed fourth down conversion, Beau Nowell found a wide open Courtland Cumby for a 39-yard touchdown pass to put the Pirates up 14-0 late in the first quarter.
On Bastrop’s ensuing posession, Monroe drove the Bears to the Poteet 18-yard-line, but was picked off by Greg Meek.
Bastrop tried to get the ball in the endzone late in the second quarter as Monroe drove the Bears into Pirate territory before fumbling on the 38-yard-line, allowing Poteet to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room.
Bastrop quickly responded to open the second half when a 22-yard pass from Monroe to Robert “Buddy” Nunn set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Marcus Reed.
That would be the start of a third quarter that saw 42 points scored.
Nowell answered Reed’s touchdown with a 12-yard toss to Cumby to keep the Pirates’ 14-point cushion.
The Bears kept the game of cat-and-mouse going on its next possession when Monroe connected with Trae Bunton for a 6-yard score.
It took Poteet two plays to counter with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Nowell to Steven Hicks, who had two scores in the third quarter.
Nunn caught his only touchdown pass on Bastrop’s ensuing possession, a 15-yarder from Monroe.
Nunn finished the game with 11 catches for 174 yards and one touchdown.
Still trailing by 14, Monroe ran the ball in from the 2-yard-line with 7:46, but a bad snap on the point after try put the Bears down by eight midway through the fourth quarter.
The Bears defense held the Pirates to three-and-out on the next possession and Monroe answered with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Mason Foytik, who caught the conversion attempt to tie the game at 35 with five minutes to go.
But like they had all game, Poteet answered with a 13-yard touchdown run by Hicks with 4:37 left in the game.
With one last attempt, Bastrop got the ball into Poteet territory, but a personal foul call on second down put the Bears back at midfield.
Facing second down and 25-yards to go, Monroe connected with Bunton for a 13-yard score but was sacked on fourth down to end any hopes of a Bears comeback.
With his 623 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, Monroe passed the 10,000 yard mark for career offense and has 100 total touchdowns.
After the game, Perry said he was proud of what his seniors, including Monroe, has accomplished.
“These guys are special,” he said. “They got this community behind them and brought it together. I am real proud of them.”

Great season Bears. We are all so proud of you. You even had the vets at the American Legion (gathered around a lap top broadcasting KVET over an amp they rigged up) banging on the bar and raising the roof, all excited and proud as hell! We love ya Bears! Best of luck to the Seniors and many thanks for one wild ride! GO BEARS!!!!
Congratulations Bears!!! Great Season, you should be so very proud of yourselves!!
GO BEARS!
Great Season Bears!! “You did us proud”, and we look forward to next year. Congratulations and good luck to the Seniors. GO BEARS!!!!
Wow what a season!! No regrets boys. You all played your hearts out. This season will go down in history. Trust that. You all gave Bastrop a couple of Championship Trophies, a trip to Dallas Cowboys Stadium “AND WON”, and you gave a little town like Bastrop something to rally around as a community, but most of all something to be VERY proud of..OUR BASTROP BEARS. Our football program is definately a force to be reckoned with. Hats off to our coaching staff! I’ll never forget this season, thanks boys!!!!!
Great season but, if Bastrop would have played defense with the attacking & agressive way they did in first half, Bastrop would still be playing. Watch out for next year. We should have a competetive team again. Congratulations on a great season. GO BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not forget the bad call on pooch kick, that was a game changer.
Thank you for all of the Bears(coaching staff and players) that help Josiah be the best Quartback in Central Texas (10,000 yards and 100 TD). What a great high school career for little guy among giants… Can’t wait for the next football Josiah “The Masiah-football ” Monroe…. Also, thank you Michael Adams for the stories and stats covering Bastrop Football…
Love them Bears
thats cool. ya’ll are a big supporters.. but i would be surprised if the coaching staff comes back.. now that monroe is gone.. they don’t have another Qb like him coming up, and won’t have success anywhere close to this year…. besides his stock is high now (and he is losing money, since is he no longer AD,).. its a great time leave on a high note.. he was here 4 yrs.. rode monroe’s coat-tail.. so he needs to get out quick.. he may be able to pick any job he wants and make more money esp. with the money troubles Bastrop ISD has… BUT if he stays and struggles cuz he was ALL IN with monroe.. then it would be harder to find another CUSH job like he had here..
it will be interesting to see if this happens..
Sorry guys, last I saw, Josiah wasn’t the only one on the field and for him to do what he did, he needed the help of his teammates. They won as a team, they lost as a team. This wasn’t the Josiah Show. Try having some faith in these boys, they had a fantastic season and we are very proud of them ALL.
” This wasn’t the Josiah Show.” Tell that to Mr. Adams..
Mama Bear.. he wasn’t the only one.. but he was the most important one.. next year.. they will for sure have to be a team.. since they have depended on him for 3 yrs.. it will be interesting to see how they react to that.. i think the kids will be ok.. but its Perry that will take it harder.. it is very hard to come back from a very successful season like this and try to reach the same success anything less then this year will be a let down.. without Monroe.. it will be a long season..
best of luck to the boys next year
Congrats on a great season boys! The entire community is so very proud of you and the sportsmanship you showed during the season! Thanks for all the near heart attacks you gave us throughout the season. You should be so proud of everything y’all accomplished. I’ve never been more proud to be a Bastrop HS Alumni and a Bastrop Bear fan! To the seniors, best of luck in the future! Thanks for the memories! Go Bears Go!
Perry will stay. He has some ball players coming back & from what i hear, he has a very talented QB coming in as a JR. The coach that needs to go, not for a better job, but for lack of coaching skills, is DEF. Coord. The Bears rode Monroe for 2 years. Why do you think they had to score over 50 pt`s. in 2 playoff games? Lack of defense. You can`t blame players for the schemes coord. called. Patmon needs to go. And why did you Mr. Adams even bring up the idea of Perry leaving , when we are only 3 days past last game? Def. gave up almost 400 yd`s. a game. So, you tell me ,who should stay & who should go.
Why get rid of Patmon when he made the defense what it is? Before Patmon, defense wasn’t crap.
What defense? Teams avg. over 400 yd`s. offense against us. If we had a defense we would still be playing. Coach Mayberry is a perfect candidate.
Best advice I could give the coaches and the fans….don’t ever forget this year BUT do NOT dwell on it. Coaches you MUST coach the team you have next year not what you had this year. Adjust to what you have and make it happen with them. Just because it worked this year doesn’t mean it will next. You will only hurt the players and not allow them to reach their potential. You will hurt them in ways you can not imagine. A good coach adjusts to the talent he is given and finds a way to bring out their best. Believe in them and support them at all costs. Good Luck next year!! I think you all have a great thing going……Fans—Keep rooting for them!!
Well put KT. Thank you! We can sit there and dwell on what could’ve beens, but it will not change anything. I am so overly proud of these athletes it brings me to tears because they deserved it for the 100% heart and work they put in to each and every football practice and games. We love our Bears!!!
How many of the players on the varsity team were from the Cedar Creek attendance zone? Now, look into your crystal ball. What’s next? Will BHS have the talent to compete?
In all actuality, this years team did go as far as the`66 team. They went 4 rounds, just as `66 did. That was before 64 teams in playoffs. Congratulatios on a terrific season. We will be back. Go BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!
Why would Perry stay? The record doesn’t mean anything to him, its about the zeros and commas in his bank account.
