Have you had a chance to visit the Bastrop County Animal Shelter recently? Next Saturday, May 7, is the “purr-fect” opportunity to come out, visit the shelter, meet the staff, see the cute animals looking for that forever home and have some fun during the shelter’s third annual open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shelter is located at 589 Coolwater Dr.
“We host this event every year to help encourage people to get to know the shelter,” said Sherri DeLeon, chair of Friends of the Bastrop County Animal Shelter. “Come on out, see all the improvements that have been made and have some fun.”
Besides lots of activities, attendees can register for a grand prize drawing of four one-day passes to SeaWorld San Antonio, a $240 value. Entry forms will be available at the open house and the winning entry will be drawn on Tuesday, May 10. The winner will be notified by phone.
“It’s an enjoyable time for everyone to come out and have fun,” said Troy Walters, shelter director. “It’s family friendly and free. The staff enjoys this as much as the people who come. It’s a great event for them, as well.”
Some of the activities include watching the Bastrop Volunteer Fire Department’s Jaws of Life turn 2×4s into splinters. Additionally, the Capitol of Texas petting zoo will be there with many young animals. Wildlife Rescue will be on hand to answer questions about all those wild critters you’ve seen and how you can live with them.
Bikers Against Child Abuse will have their motorcycles there for the kids to sit on and parents can take pictures. Get your children’s ID taken by Citizens on Patrol as part of their identification program. And let’s not forget the pets – come and find out about a low cost spay/neuter program the Friends offer and bring your pet so they can receive a free microchip that will help to find them should they get lost.
Admission is free, there will be activities and games for the children, food and drink and a raffle. There will be fun for everyone and who knows – you might even find your own personal ‘man’s best friend’ or a furry lap cat.
