PFLUGERVILLE — The Connally Lady Cougars found a way to break Elgin, defeating the Lady Cats in straight sets, 25-21, 26-24, 25-17 Friday at Cougar Gym in Pflugerville.

Elgin got 10 kills, 14 digs and eight assists from preseason Bastrop County Player of the Year Kelsey Harkins, but just played out of sync, according to head coach Hollie Huston.

“They broke our block over and over,” Huston said. “We did well at making some adjustments to the timing of their hitters and got several blocks, but overall it just didn’t amount to anything in the end.”

Connally came out of the gate and showed no intimidation to the defending District 16-4A champions, taking the first set 25-12.

Elgin (14-15, 3-2 District 16-4A) kept it close in the second set, falling 26-24 and then lost the third set 25-17.

Shelbi Swenson had eight kills to go with 12 digs and an ace while Alyssa Wilkins had five kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Morgan Schultz had 14 assists.

Elgin wore maroon ribbons to show support for the Bastrop fire victims.

The Lady Cats will play a non-district game Tuesday at Liberty Hill before returning home to host rival Bastrop on Friday. Both games are scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
