Would you like to adopt a free pet?

On Monday, the Bastrop County Animal Control shelter will be having free adoptions for approximately 60 dogs and cats that remain unclaimed after the Bastrop County Complex Fire.

The day will mark the resumption of pet adoptions at the shelter after that activity was suspended in the aftermath of the fire to allow pet owners to reclaim their pets that had fled during the fire.

“We are calling this our Mega-Adoption Event,” said shelter director Troy Walters. “I think just about everybody wants to rescue an animal displaced, and not claimed, after the fire and this is their opportunity.”

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. All that is needed is to be 18 and be a homeowner or have your landlord’s permission to have a pet.

Walters said the shelter will be waiving all adoption fees for the week.

“If people want, they may make a donation that will be given to the Friends of the Bastrop County Animal Shelter,” Walters said, referring to the local group of volunteers that supports the shelter through work, sponsoring events and monetary support.

Other Bastrop-area animals were transported to Austin, Walters said.

“Some of the injured animals from the Bastrop fires went to the Austin Humane Society and photos of those dogs and cats are on their website,” Walters said, referring to  www.austinhumanesociety.org. A photo album of pets from the Bastrop area may be viewed under the heading, “Missing your Bastrop pet?”

I do hope that this adoption went well. I hope that all of these new owners realize that these dogs and cats have been through a traumatic month. They had to go through the experience of the wild fire and and the kennel with a lot of stress from other dogs and cats.

If your new adopted pet is having behavior problems in the next few months please contact a trainer or behaviorist before you return the dog or cat to the Bastrop Animal Control.

Good luck and I hope you have adopted wonderful pet.
