Bastrop’s boys soccer team is getting into the habit of scoring late goals to win playoff games.

Last week against Cedar Ridge, Colin Higginbotham scored the winner for the Bears 72 minutes into an 80-minute game. (He added another goal moments later.)

Tuesday against Austin LBJ, it was Higginbotham again, breaking a 0-0 deadlock in overtime with a goal some three and a half hours after kickoff, thanks to a nearly two-hour lightning delay that stopped the game twenty minutes into the first half and meant it ended just before midnight.

Throughout the game the Bears had their share of nicely worked passing sequences and offensive moves. Their goal did not come at the end of one of them. Instead, it was a simple pass from a defender and a good play by the attacker that got Bastrop into the sectional round of the 4A soccer playoffs against Hendrickson.

Bastrop fullback Rico Rubio lobbed a pass from near the halfway line to a spot just between a pair of LBJ defenders, where neither came out to clear. Higginbotham cut across one of them from outside to beat him to the ball, took a touch to get the ball between them and hit a low shot into the far corner.

“Colin’s probably the fastest guy on the team, a pure finisher,” said Bastrop head coach Robert Faires.

For most of the game LBJ seemed the more likely team to get a goal off a long pass finding a fast forward, since that strategy was the basis for practically their entire offense. The Bears did struggle a bit in the opening minutes of the game, their misplaced passes gifting the ball back to LBJ and giving them more opportunities to kick it long for their forwards.

The wind during that first 20-minute stretch made those long balls unpredictable for Bastrop keeper John Fajardo and his defense, leading to hesitation when they couldn’t tell where a ball was going and who should deal with it. The Jaguars’ speedy forwards looked threatening on these breaks, but their best chance before the weather-induced intermission came when one of their forwards beat Bastrop’s defenders to a throw-in inside the box and shot wide.

Bastrop returned to the field after the delay looking sharper than when they had left it. They immediately started putting chances together, centerback Anthony Perez making an interception and charging downfield with the ball before crossing just high for forward John Thorne. Midfielder Margarito Perez had a low roller bound for the far corner tipped wide by a diving LBJ keeper. Forward Clayton Raemsch hit the post after a long run down the right side.

“Sometimes it seems like it takes us a while to settle down,” Faires said. The break, he said, gave them time to do that, to take what they had seen in the first twenty minutes and apply it on the field.

One of those changes was a formational tweak, playing Thorne high up against the back line to occupy multiple defenders and leaving Raemsch free to roam from side to side just underneath him. The change successfully stretched the LBJ defense – at times they were marking Thorne and Raemsch with two defenders or midfielders each even when they had the ball, helping Bastrop control the midfield.

The Jaguars, however, had little interest in controlling midfield, and instead constantly sought to threaten with immediate long passes. Those passes kept Bastrop centerback Juan Mendoza busy, tackling away runners who were through on goal, heading out high passes, even clearing two balls with a pair of well-timed overhead kicks.

“They were able to match them and get the angles right,” Faires said of his defense.

Both teams struggled for portions of the second half. LBJ looking less threatening when countering. Bastrop took chances to pass downfield, but the Jaguar defenders pressured them quickly to keep them from turning towards goal.

With a little under 30 minutes left in the game, Bastrop’s Yeison Meza headed a cross from Hart McMillan wide, but it would be LBJ who would have the best chance of the half, hitting the post with a header off a corner kick that left the ball rebounding back across the goal. Fajardo managed get a hand to it, clawing back over his shoulder to tip the ball out. The ensuing shot was blocked by one of the Bastrop defenders in front of goal and cleared out.

LBJ had a couple of chances to tie it in the second period of overtime. Matt Argenbright gave a crucial bump to on forward threatening to shoot, causing it to go wide. Another open shot was deflected out for a corner kick, and the Bears cleared a final free kick with 15 second on the board, earning the win as an exhausted Margarito Perez dribbled the ball downfield into empty space until time expired.

The Bears will play Hendrickson Thursday evening, April 5, at 8 p.m. at Hendrickson High School. UPDATE: The game time has been moved to 7 p.m., rather than 8 p.m.

It was always going to be a tough ask for the Cedar Creek boys soccer team: Their young squad, without any seniors and only a handful of juniors on the roster, facing off in the bi-district round of the playoffs against four-time defending District 50-4A champion Hendrickson in the first playoff game in their program’s history.

The Eagles lost Friday’s game at Hendrickson High School 3-1, and while the loss and the end of their first varsity season may have stung, Cedar Creek head coach Kris Lautenschlager says the game gave his team an opportunity to see how far they’ve come, and where they might be able to go next year.

“Playing a good team like this enables us to know and believe that we can compete with any team in the state,” he said. “The boys were noticeably nervous in the first half. We are over that feeling going into next year.”

Hendrickson outshot the Eagles 10-3 in the first half, going into the locker room up 2-0, with the second coming with just over a minute to go until halftime. Cedar Creek saw their best chance of the half, a Ricky Sanchez one-on-one opportunity, saved by the Hendrickson keeper.

The second half saw a resurgent Eagles side emerge. Just two minutes had elapsed when Cedar Creek’s Joel Olivares let fly an unstoppable shot from about 25-yards out to bring the score to 2-1.

“The boys were back in the game and had their confidence back at that point,” Lautenschlager said. Hendrickson’s passing game continued to fire, but they got far fewer opportunities on goal, just four to the Eagles’ nine. Cedar Creek was unfortunate to give up a third goal with just eight minutes left in the game.

“I am just so proud of the boys, both JV and varsity, for the seasons they had this year,” Lautenschlager said. CCHS’ JV side won district; varsity was in the thick of the district title race all year. Now, their coach says, the team has an idea of why that title is worth fighting for.

“There will be no settling for 4th place next year,” Lautenschlager said.

Instead, the Eagles are shooting for at least one, they hope many more, playoff wins.

For the first time in six years, the Bastrop boys soccer team has won a playoff game.

The Bears defeated Cedar Ridge 3-1 Friday night at Cedar Creek High School, advancing to the area round thanks to some stout defending and a goal from Anthony Perez and two from Colin Higginbotham.

The balance of play was closer than the two-goal score line would indicate for much of the game, something Bears head coach Robert Faires admitted afterwards.

“They really threatened us in the back,” said Faires. “It took us a while to settle down.”

Cedar Ridge utilized three defenders and five midfielders, including three in the center of the field who combined well in the early goings to keep possession and move the ball quickly when they had it and win it back from the Bears when they didn’t, setting the tone early for what would be a physical contest.

Unfortunately for them, that’s how Bastrop’s defense prefers it. Faires said that the referee’s tendency to let contact go unpunished probably helped his team more than it hurt them. As such, the Raiders had far more luck playing the ball forward on the ground, as the Bear defenders and midfielders won nearly every ball in the air.

Bastrop had more luck early on going down the outside of the field, with their fullbacks and outside midfielders trying to play past the lone wide player on each Cedar Ridge side. Their best chances early on would be a preview of things to come: Higginbotham outran the Cedar Ridge defense to a long pass before cutting inside and shooting, and Perez headed over early after a corner kick cross.

Still, the Raiders had the better of the game through much of the first half, even if Bastrop’s defense kept them to having just a few clear chances to show from it. Their best goal-scoring opportunities in the first 40 minutes were denied by three solid plays in quick succession from the Bear defense, centerback Anthony Perez running down a Cedar Ridge attacker on a breakaway, goalkeeper John Fajardo making a save on the follow-up, and centerback Juan Mendoza throwing himself in front of the second follow-up to save what would otherwise have been a sure goal.

The Bears finally broke through with a little more than two minutes left in the half. Clayton Raemsch took the ball off a Cedar Ridge defender to earn a corner kick, which Rico Rubio placed back post, right onto the head of Perez, who put the Bears ahead. Fajardo preserved their lead two minutes later, coming up with a huge save to deny a Cedar Ridge goal just before halftime.

Up a goal to start the second half, Bastrop dropped Raemsch from his forward position into a deep-lying midfield role next to Dalton Kelly, successfully stymieing Cedar Ridge’s passing in the center for a time before moving Raemsch back as a second forward to add more goal threat.

Cedar Ridge got their goal just more than ten minutes into the half, a quick break leading to Perez fouling a Raider player in the box to give up a penalty kick, which they converted to make it 1-1.

For a time after the goal the Raiders took control of the game again, their pressing working to keep Bastrop from getting the ball in dangerous positions. But as the time ticked down into the final fifteen minutes or so, they seemed to lose their patience, hitting long balls to their forwards that were won by Bastrop’s defense and allowing the Bears to regain the momentum.

Their control finally paid off in a goal with eight and a half minutes left in the game. Cedar Ridge’s goalkeeper stopped but couldn’t catch a shot from Bastrop’s Juan Carmona, and Higginbotham beat everyone else to the rebound to score and make it 2-1. Minutes later, Higginbotham added an insurance goal, running onto a pass behind the Cedar Ridge backline and scoring to put the game out of reach.

“They’re a good team with a good style of play,” Faires said. “It took us most of the first half to adapt, but we made adjustments to the speed of play and their positioning.”

Bastrop plays Austin LBJ at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at BISD Memorial Stadium.

Cedar Creek draws first blood to defeat Bastrop 2-0.

CEDAR CREEK – Cedar Creek struck the first blow Friday night in the Bastrop County boys soccer rivalry, defeating the Bastrop Bears 2-0 in a matchup between two of the leading teams in District 49-4A on goals from Joel Olivares and Jose Ortiz.
The scattered heavy rain rolling through the area played its part in the contest. Leading passes skidded out of bounds and fair tackles slipped into fouls, breaking up the rhythm of the game and at times turning it into midfield trench warfare, spiked with fast counterattacks by either side.
It was on one of these that the Eagles scored their first goal with 16 minutes left in the first half. A long pass from across the midfield line was flicked on to forward Joel Olivares, who drew the Bastrop goalkeeper out of his net before chipping it over him and into the far corner of the goal.
“It was a beautiful goal on the counter attack,” said Cedar Creek coach Kris Lautenschlager.
Cedar Creek had to wait until midway through the second half to add to their lead, doing so on a penalty kick from Ortiz after Olivares was fouled in the box. Lautenschlager said afterwards that the 2-0 scoreline flattered his team.
“I can’t take anything away from them,” he said. “We got beat all over the field.”
Indeed, apart from the two goals, Bastrop’s midfield and defense used their hard running and physicality to deal well with Cedar Creek’s fluid system, where players like Ortiz, Olivares and Bert Cano could pop up deep in midfield one minute and in the furthest forward position the next.
The Bears and Eagles each had their chances from set pieces, especially with the uncertain footing from the rain driving up the number of fouls. Ortiz hit the football crossbar with a just-high free kick from 40 yards out midway through the first half, and later smacked another off the left post of Bastrop’s goal. Bastrop defender Anthony Perez had a header go narrowly over Cedar Creek’s goal in the game’s final minutes.
Both teams pressed each other hard in midfield, denying opposing players time to look up and find teammates with a pass. When Bastrop was able to get it forward, Cedar Creek’s defense did well to take the ball off their strikers’ feet, and goalkeeper Chris Venegas came up with several timely stops.
Lautenschlager praised the work of his defense, but said he hoped to improve his team’s ability to keep possession in midfield. Despite the win, he isn’t going to let his team become complacent.
“I still think Bastrop’s the best team in the district,” he said.
He and the Eagles will have a chance to find out for sure on Tuesday, March 20, when the teams meet again in Bastrop.

CEDAR CREEK – The Bastrop boys soccer team may not have gotten the win Monday, but it definitely felt that way.
Bastrop tied defending Class 5A runner-up McNeil 3-3 at BISD Memorial Stadium, storming back after being down 1-0 at halftime.
