The Bastrop girls soccer team has their new coach.
Denton Guyer’s Marc Cox was hired to take over the Bastrop girls soccer team and met with his new team for the first time Friday.
Cox takes over for Angelia Watson, who will take the girls coordinator/ head girls soccer coach job at Frisco Lone Star High School.
“I have always heard great things about the soccer program here,” Cox said. “The local sports scene here has a great atmosphere and this is just a nice area.”
Cox has a long time friendship with Angelia and Robert Watson going back to Cox’s days as head coach at Corsicana High School where Robert Watson was an assistant under Cox.
Cox has an impressive resume.
He has served at Guyer for the last two years and took his team to the Region II-4A finals where they lost to Canyon Randall.
Guyer was a sectional finalist in 2009 in its first year playing varsity soccer.
While at Corsicana, Cox led the Lady Tigers to three straight playoff appearances, including a spot in the 2006 Region II-4A quarterfinals.
Bastrop has made the playoffs in each of the last four years, but has never made it out of the first round.
Bastrop loses six seniors from this years team and will have to replace All-Central Texas forward Kattie Patterson.

Girls coach Angelia Watson taking head coach/coordinator job at Lone Star High School in Frisco.

Bastrop High School head girls soccer coach Angelia Watson and head boys soccer coach Robert Watson are stepping down.
In a text message, Robert Watson said they have resigned and Angelia Watson will take over as head coach and girls coordinator at the new Lone Star High School in Frisco.
Angelia Watson has led the Bastrop girls program to the playoffs in each of the last four seasons.
Bastrop was 0-4 in the playoffs under Angelia Watson, losing to San Antonio Churchill in 2007 and San Antonio Reagan in each of the last three seasons.
Four players — Kelly Guthrey, Kara Edwards, Kattie Patterson and Kaylyn Butler — have gone on to play in college under Angelia Watson’s guidance, with two receiving full scholarships to Division I universities.
This past season, Angelia Watson’s team was surrounded by controversy after the coach suspended her top player — senior forward Gracy Mansfield — and junior Heather Greene for the season after a 4-1 loss to Westlake on Feb. 2.
Reports were also made to the University Interscholastic League that the Lady Bears were playing players not living in the district, but those reports were found to be not true after an in-house investigation.
The Bastrop girls head coaching job was posted on the Texas Girls Coaches Association Web site on Thursday afternoon
The boys head coaching job was also posted on the Texas Coaches Association Web site on Thursday afternoon.
There are currently four total soccer head coaching vacancies listed for the Bastrop Independent School District.
Robert Watson led Bastrop’s boys team to back-to-back trips to the playoffs in 2007 and 2008.
In 2007, Bastrop reached the regional quarterfinals before losing to Westlake 2-1.
The Bears just missed out on the playoffs in 2009, finishing in fifth place.
Bastrop had its worst season under Robert Watson this year. The Bears finished tied for seventh place with Austin High and had just two district wins.

One bad offsides call changed complexion of Bastrop's girls soccer playoff game.

Pro football has it.
So does the NBA, National Hockey League, college football, college basketball and Major League Baseball.
In this day of accuracy, instant replay has become a permanent fixture in college and professional sports.
In high schools, however, instant replay is a distant dream of anything that is remotely possible.
The cost would be too much for a publicly funded school district.
Each of the 32 NFL football clubs spent $300,000 in 2007 for the instant replay system used in the NFL today.
What school district has that much money? The better question is, what taxpayer wants to see their taxes raised to pay for it?
Texas athletic directors might want to look into the possibility of doing something to ensure accuracy from its officials.
According to Mark Hudson, policy director for the University Interscholastic League, there isn’t even a procedure in place for teams that want to protest calls that potentially change the outcome of a game.
One bad call — most of the time — cannot and will not change the outcome of a game, but it did Tuesday night.
The offsides call on Kattie Patterson in Bastrop’s bi-district playoff game with San Antonio Reagan changed the entire complexion of the game.
Patterson was called offsides by the line judge from the Brazos Valley chapter of soccer officials.
The call was controversial because Patterson’s goal should have tied the game with 10 minutes left to play.
In the photo of Patterson’s shot on this particular goal, which accompanies this article, she is clearly onsides.
Patterson has one defender in front of her and another one that is parallel to her when she is taking the shot, thus not offsides.
However, due to no policy or procedure for protesting games or calls like this one in particular, Bastrop had nothing it could do to correct this wrong.
“Once the game is over, it’s over,” Hudson said.
Hudson added that the head coach could protest the call at the time it was called.
Most officials, however, will not reverse calls once they are made and if Bastrop head coach Angelia Watson would have argued the call, she took the risk of getting a caution (yellow card) or being ejected with a red card, depending on the level she took her protest.
Unfortunately, this is one call that ultimately changed everything for the Lady Bears.
For the first 30 minutes of the second half, Bastrop had eight shots to Reagan’s two.
Bastrop was dominating this half and had about as much momentum as a steam engine on its way down a 30-foot mountain without breaks.
If Patterson’s goal would have stood, the game would have been tied for the last 10 minutes and Bastrop, more than likely, would have found the back of the goal again with its momentum.
The case could be made that Reagan’s Sarah Van Horn scored after Patterson’s goal, but who knows if that would have happened if Patterson’s goal would have counted.
That call shifted momentum from Bastrop and put it with the Lady Rattlers.
This was a playoff game in which one team was on the verge of tying the No. 1 team in the state.
The game had upset written all over it when Patterson scored this goal, but for the six seniors on this team, there will always be that doubt.
The UIL needs to address this issue for no other reason than to protect the integrity of the game.
Allow a coach the chance to protest a game within 24 hours if they have enough evidence to prove that a call made changed the complexion of the game, much like Tuesday night’s call did.
While instant replay might be an unrealistic method to getting it right, there has to be other avenues available to assure an official cannot change the complexion of a game with one wrong call.

The Bastrop Lady Bears lost to No. 1 San Antonio Reagan 3-1 in the bi-district round of the Region IV-5A girls soccer playoffs at BISD Memorial Stadium.

CEDAR CREEK — For a team that has seen its share of controversy, Tuesday night’s ending was rather fitting.
The Bastrop Lady Bears lost to No. 1 San Antonio Reagan 3-1 in the bi-district round of the Region IV-5A girls soccer playoffs at BISD Memorial Stadium.
The Lady Bears (14-7-3) trailed by one goal when Kattie Patterson found the back of the net to what should have been the tying goal.
The cheers from the large crowd at Bastrop quickly turned to boos when the goal was waived off to a controversial offsides call on Patterson.
It proved to be the difference between winning and losing, said head coach Angelia Watson.
“I definitely believe we would have scored again if that call wasn’t made,” Watson said. “Kattie was our equalizer.”
Bastrop fell behind 2-0 at halftime after the Lady Rattlers (18-2-2) got two goals from Sarah Van Horn, who finished the game scoring all three of Reagan’s goals.
The Lady Rattlers dominated the first half, holding Bastrop to just one shot on goal and using their aggressive attack to throw the Lady Bears off their game.
Reagan took no time attacking, getting a shot on goal within the first two minutes of the game.
Bastrop, however, showed its tenacity in the second half and dominated possession and looked to be out-powering the top-ranked Lady Rattlers.
Patterson found the back of the net in the first 10 minutes of the second half on a powerful shot from 30-yards out.
The senior striker left the game six minutes later with what appeared to be a pulled hamstring.
The Lady Bears didn’t let up its attack, however, and had a chance to score with 14:41 left to play when the ball bounced over Reagn goalkeeper Jenna Graas’ head. Bastrop was unable to take advantage of the opportunity.
After the controversial offsides call, Patterson and company had their momentum taken out of them and Van Horn unleashed the Lady Rattlers venom one last time with 8:14 left to play to complete the hat trick.
“You have to give it to these girls, they played relentlessly,” Watson said. “There was a lot of young players out there, so we have a lot to build on.”
It was the third straight year Reagan eliminated Bastrop from the playoffs and fourth year in-a-row that the Lady Bears lost in the first round.
This year, however, was Bastrop’s best playoff appearance, despite the loss.
The Lady Bears will move to Class 4A after earning a playoff berth for four straight years.

BRENHAM — The Elgin Lady Cats soccer season came to a heartbreaking end Tuesday afternoon in Brenham.
Elgin fell to Richmond Foster 1-0 in the Region IV-4A bi-district girls soccer playoffs.
Foster scored with just seven minutes left to play after a fierce battle with Elgin’s offense and defense.
Elgin goalkeeper Sarah Wright blocked nearly 15 attempts by Foster before she eventually let one through.
The Lady Cats junior striker Ashley Frederick, who had 20 goals on the season for Elgin, could not get her powerful foot to send the ball into the net in the final minutes.
Elgin ended its season in third place in District 48-4A after winning the title last year.

Bowie defeated Bastrop 2-0 Friday night at BISD Memorial Stadium in the teams final regular season game.

CEDAR CREEK — The Bastrop Lady Bears know their opponent thanks to the Bowie Lady Bulldogs.
Bowie defeated Bastrop 2-0 Friday night at BISD Memorial Stadium in the teams final regular season game.
The loss guarantees a playoff matchup with Class 5A’s No. 1 team — the San Antonio Reagan Lady Rattlers. A team all too familiar to the Lady Bears.
This time around, however, Bastrop will get Reagan on its home turf in a playoff game scheduled for March 23 at 6:30 p.m. at BISD Memorial Stadium.
On senior night Friday, Bastrop looked as though it was going to control the pace of the game, holding Bowie without a shot in the first 14 minutes of the first half.
Once the Lady Bulldogs broke through a tough Lady Bear defense led by senior Kerri Kelley, Bowie took control of the game.
Jaclyn Ramierz scored with 2:34 left in the first half to give the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Kelley saved a sure Bowie goal in the 48th minute of the game, heading it out of the goal, but Bowie would find the back of the net one more time with 22:26 left in the game.
Bastrop had its opportunities, but just couldn’t find its way into the net.

ELGIN — The Elgin Lady Cats ended their regular season with a 2-0 win Friday night against a resilient Giddings squad at Wildcat Stadium.
The first-half was highlighted by a vigorous tug-of-war between the two squads’, staunch, defensive midfields. Elgin’s ace striker Ashley Frederick was denied at every opportunity by the Lady Buffaloes backline, thus leading to a deadlock at halftime.
The Lady Cats opened the second half in playoff form, getting goals by Samantha Mason and Santa Araujo, who scored in the closing minutes of the contest.
Elgin will open the Class 4A playoff next weekend against an opponent to be determined.
