CONROE — Elgin put up runs in bunches to vanquish Nacogdoches 10-2 on Thursday and 15-7 on Friday and move on to the 4A Region III Quarterfinals.

The Lady Cats committed five errors in game two, but what they lacked in efficiency in the field they made up for with it on the basepath, turning 15 hits into 15 runs on the back of two RBI from both Bailey Alanis and Chelsea Everage.

Elgin trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the third inning before the Lady Cat bats exploded in a barrage of runs.

Everage trimmed the lead to 5-4 with an RBI single to left field in the third. Shelbi Swenson walked to start the next inning. She, along with Alyssa Wilkins would cross home plate to give the Lady Cats a 6-5 lead.

After the Lady Dragons tied it back up in the top of the fourth, Elgin went up for good when Abby Prinz doubled to score Kaci Olson. Adriana Hernandez, Prinz, Alanis and Schultz would all make it around the base path give Elgin an 11-6 lead.

With a five run cushion, Wing began to settle into a rhythm. The Elgin pitcher retired six of the final eight batters she faced, and allowed just one more run the rest of the way to pick up the win.

The Lady Cat victory, combined with Forney’s 2-1 victory over Hallsville, sets up a showdown in the regional quarterfinal.

The first game between the two will take place Friday at 7 p.m. at the Waco ISD Softball Complex. Game two will be Saturday at 2 p.m. and game three (if necessary) will immediately follow.

The sweep was set up by a domant effort on Thursday from the Lady Cats.

Chelsea Everage led off the second inning with a bloop single to left field, then Kaci Olson followed it up with a single of her own. Bailey Alanis scored Everage with another hit to make it 1-0. One play later, Olson took advantage of a Lady Dragon error and came across home to make it 2-0.

“I was happy we started hitting the ball,” coach Amanda Wolf said. “I think getting some hits gave them some confidence.”

The two-run inning put the Lady Cats up for good, but they were far from done crossing home plate. They would rack up four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings as as well.

Schultz led off with a double, then Wilkins bunted her way on base. Sewalson scored Schultz and Wilkins on a double straight up the middle. Next came freshman Victoria Gonzales, who traded places with Sewalson with a double of her own.

“That was really good to see,” Wolf said. “She (Gonzales) may be a freshman, but she is proving to everyone that she can really play.”

Gonzales would conclude the rally by scoring on a fielder’s choice, making the score 6-0 Lady Cats, but the Lady Dragons got more of the same in the fifth frame. Elgin used aggressive base running to pile on two more unearned runs and two earned scores in the inning. They would score on a wild pitch, an RBI single by Wilkins, an error, and an RBI single by Everage.

The midset was to get as many runs across the plate as possible for starting pitcher Jenna Wing.

“The whole team has bought into the idea of getting her as much run support as possible,” Wolf said. That’s why we were being aggressive. “When you are playing playoff softball, you have to go out and take what is there. When the other team hands you a chance, you have to take advantage of it.”

Wing meanwhile adjusted to the Lady Dragon lineup and picked up the win, going the complete game and allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

Wing wasn’t overpowering, but was able to keep the Lady Dragons at bay with her off speed pitches, ball movement and by throwing strikes and leaning on her defense.

“I told her she has one of the best defenses in the state of Texas,” Wolf said. “The last couple of innings, I felt like she did that. Usually the sixth and seventh innings are what they are most scared of.”

Elgin and Red Oak played twice in two days, in two different parts of the state, but in the end geography didn’t matter.

The Lady Wildcats overwhelmed their first-round opponents with a pair of shutouts, and got some late runs in to pick up an 8-0 win on Friday night in Red Oak and a 5-0 victory Saturday in Elgin.

“They did a good job staying focused and using the scouting reports,” head coach Amanda Wolf said after Saturday’s win.

On Saturday the capacity purple-clad crowd stayed long after the final pitch to celebrate with the victorious Lady Wildcats, forming a tunnel as the players left the dugout and cheering them on as they made their way to the parking lot.

Elgin 8

Red Oak 0

The Lady Wildcats got things started on the road Thursday night in Red Oak, a subdivision just south of Dallas. Sewalson tripled to right field in the second inning, then Adriana Hernandez brought her in with a sacrifice to make it 1-0 Lady ‘Cats.

That turned out to be the only run support pitcher Jenna Wing would need.

The junior pitched a four-hit shutout on the mound, and kept Red Oak off balance with ball movement and off-speed pitches.

While Wing was shutting them down, the Lady Cats were piling it on. In the third inning Morgan Schultz singled to right field to score Kaci Olson and advance Bailey Alanis to third base. Alanis would later score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

In the sixth inning Adriana Gonzales would double to left field to score Alyssa Wilkins and make it 4-0.

Already leading by four runs, the seventh inning saw the Lady Cats put an exclamation point on the game with four more scores in the frame.

Shelbi Swenson belted a single through the left field gap to score Alanis and Sara McCarty. Two batters later Haley Sewalson put two more runs across the plate with a single of her own.

The Lady Cats subbed in players, with 11 Elgin batters seeing time in the box.

“We wanted to get some other girls in there for this series and get them some at-bats,” Wolf said.

Of the 11 batters, eight came through with hits, six had RBIs and six scored runs on a night when the Lady ‘Cats put up 14 hits altogether.

Red Oak 0

Elgin 5

Pitcher Jenna Wing improved on her four-hit shutout from Friday with a one-hitter Saturday, while the Lady ‘Cats found a way to grind runs across the plate, scoring five runs on just eight hits.

“We were able to manufacture runs when we needed them,” Wolf said. “I would like to see us hitting the ball a little better. That’s something we will be working on this week.”

Luckily for Wolf, the Lady Wildcats weren’t in need of a lot of runs. Between Wing’s five strikeouts and five double plays from the Lady Wildcat defense, Red Oak never had a chance to build any momentum.

Alanis and Swenson each came through with a pair of RBI, and Olson scored on an error in the game.

Printz went 2-for-3, Alanis 2-for-4, Swenson 2-for-3 and Wilkins 1-for-3 in the game.

In the field Wilkins, Prinz, Alanis, Olson and Wing all initiated double plays for the Lady ‘Cats.

Up next

Tonight, the Lady Wildcats travel to Conroe to take on Nacogdoches at Conroe College Park High School.

The Lady Dragons are 24-6 and advanced to the Area Round with a pair of 6-3, 3-1 wins over Sulphur Springs.

Elgin softball may have already clinched another district title, but as they cruise to the regular season’s close with a game against Hutto Friday, coach Amanda Wolf says she has no plans to let her team lose their sharpness by taking it easy,

“We need to go into the playoffs winning,” Wolf said.

They managed that last Friday against Bastrop, riding a dominating pitching performance from Jenna Wing to a 7-0 win over county rivals Bastrop.

Wing allowed four hits and struck out ten batters while allowing no walks in seven innings, and didn’t allow a Bastrop base-runner to get into scoring position until the sixth inning.

Elgin’s bats were also frustrated in the early goings, Bastrop pitcher Sarah Waldron allowing just one hit in the first two innings, a lead-off single to Kaci Olson, who was later caught trying to steal third. For Wolf, Elgin’s early struggles gave the team an obstacle they may not have been used to overcoming.

“The key for us all year has been our leadoff hitter getting on,” said Wolf. When the top of the order struggles, she explained, the team’s offense often falters, so she tried to explain to the rest of the lineup that they would need to come through.

“I said if the top three don’t hit, y’all need to step up and hit,” Wolf said.

In the third inning, they did, and the top of the order did their part as well in manufacturing a pair of runs for the Lady Cats. Haley Sewalson led the inning off with a single, stole second, and was sacrificed over to third by Chelsea Everage. She scored on an Olson single, the latter’s second groundball hit up the middle for the game. Olson would score when the next batter, Abby Prinz, hit a line drive double to right field.

From there, Wing took over. She had allowed a pair of singles in her first three innings of work, to Bastrop’s Gisella Paranich and Ashley Murray, but got Bastrop one-two-three in the fourth and fifth to give her offense some time to build on their lead.

They added one in the fourth, and it could have been more if not for some heads-up defense by Bastrop. Elgin got two runners on quickly through a Shelbi Swenson single and a Bastrop error. Elgin sent the runner home on Alyssa Wilkins’ single to left field, but Paranich’s throw made it in time to allow Katie Gorton to place the tag on Sara McCarty, courtesy running for Swenson. A sacrifice fly on the next play brought Morgan Schultz home, but another long fly-ball out to Paranich kept the damage to one.

Unfortunately for the Lady Bears, Elgin’s bats stayed hot in the next inning. A pair of Bastrop errors helped Everage and Olson get extra bases on hits that would otherwise have been singles. Both would later score. A Bailey Alanis single and a Morgan Schultz walk gave Elgin two more baserunners, who Wilkins brought home with her double.

“Once we got those first couple of runs, the bats started coming around,” Wolf said.

Bastrop threatened in the bottom of the sixth after Paranich reached base on an error. Rachel West’s single brought her to second, but she was caught at home trying to score on Becca Roe’s groundball.

Bastrop held Elgin in the sixth, again thanks to the defense of Paranich and Gorton. A walk and an Everage single put two runners on to start the inning, and they were moved over on an Olson sacrifice. The next batter, Prinz, hit a deep fly-ball to left that Paranich caught, then nabbed a tagging Gonzales at home with an on-the-money throw to Gorton.

Bastrop threatened again in the seventh. Emily Tarango led the inning off with a single, and Gorton reached on Elgin’s third error of the day. They advanced to second and third on Maureen Byrd’s groundout, giving the Lady Bears two runners in scoring position with just one out.
Wing wouldn’t relinquish her shutout so easily. She struck out the last two Bastrop batters.

Still, Wolf said the seventh inning of games was something Wing and the Elgin defense needed to work on. In the game before their win over Bastrop, Elgin gave up three runs in the seventh in a 4-3, non-district loss to Round Rock.

“We need to figure that out,” Wolf said. “We can’t afford it in the playoffs.”

Elgin played Cedar Creek Tuesday night at Elgin. They’ll face off against Hutto Friday at 7 p.m.

The Elgin softball team’s offense had a pretty good night Friday, April 6, scoring 11 runs in four innings in their win over Connally.

Their pitcher was better than pretty good.

Jenna Wing threw a perfect game against the Lady Cougars, going five innings without allowing a single baserunner and striking out five in the process.

Elgin had made just one out in the game when Morgan Schultz’s bases loaded double brought home Kaci Olson, Bailey Alanis and Sara McCarty, courtesy running for Shelbi Swenson. Alyssa Wilkins’ double on the next play scored Schultz.

They added another in the second, Chelsea Everage scoring on an Abby Prinz single after reaching first on a bunt, plus three more in the third, with Adriana Hernandez singling to score Schultz and Wilkins before Everage’s groundout brought Haley Sewalson home.

Prinz doubled to lead the bottom of the fourth off then scored on an Alanis triple. Alanis was brought home by Schultz’s sacrifice fly. Wilkins scored her second run of the game when McCarty singled to right field.

Schultz finished 2-2 with two runs and four RBIs for the Lady Cats. Wilkins also went 2-2 with two runs scored, and Alanis and Prinz both finished 2-3.

Round Rock 4, Elgin 3

The Round Rock softball team mounted a three-run, seventh inning rally to knock off Elgin 4-3 Tuesday, April 10.

It’s a tribute to the Cats’ opportunistic offense that they were still in the game at all. Elgin’s offense managed only three hits during the game, but they turned those hits into three runs all the same, and held Round Rock to just one run in the first six innings.

The Lady Cats, as they tend to do, got on the board early, Olson’s lead-off triple turning into run when she scored on Prinz’s sacrifice fly.

The two teams traded runs in the second, Round Rock tying the game in the top of the inning on three singles, and Elgin getting another when Wilkins walked to lead the inning off, was sacrificed to second by Sewalson, then scored on a Round Rock error.

The bats went quiet for two innings after that, Elgin going one-two-three in the third and fourth while Round Rock got a couple of runners on base due to walks but left them all stranded.

Elgin got their third and final run when Everage was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on an Olson groundout. She scored on Prinz’s single on the next play.

Down 3-1 entering their final at-bat, Round Rock didn’t give up, stringing together a series of five singles and a walk to score three times. Elgin couldn’t get a comeback of their own going in the bottom of the inning.

Olson, Prinz and Swenson had hits for the Lady Cats. Wing took the loss, striking out three and allowing 10 hits in seven innings of work.

Elgin 8, Cedar Ridge 3

The Lady Cats jumped out to a five-run lead in the second inning against Cedar Ridge and never looked back April 3 as they beat the Lady Raiders 8-3.

Elgin got strong performances at the plate from Olson, 2-4 with three RBIs and a run, Alanis, 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Hernandez, 2-3 with a run and an RBI.

Cedar Ridge scored once in the fourth and twice in the seventh, but Elgin’s Wing killed the late rally by getting three straight outs with two runners on base to preserve the win. Wing pitched all seven innings, striking out five and allowing three hits and just two earned runs.

Elgin played Bastrop Friday night. They’ll take on Cedar Creek in Elgin on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the regular season April 20 at Hutto.

By MICHAEL ADAMS

Sports Editor

ELGIN – Elgin pitcher Jenna Wing had a bad night Friday.

Unfortunately for Cedar Ridge, Wing had backup.

Elgin used a big fifth inning that saw the Lady Cats put up six runs to defeat Cedar Ridge 9-5 at Lady Cat Field and stay unbeaten in District 16-4A.

“It’s been like that all year,” said head coach Amanda Wolf. “(Thursday) was tough; we lost three and got run-ruled. We made some adjustments and they rallied around her (Friday).”

Elgin pulled out a run off of Cedar Ridge pitcher Nicole Merrill, who only gave up one hit in the first inning to Kaci Olson to lead off the game. Olson would score on an error that advanced Shelbi Swenson to first base, but Olson’s hit was the only one of the inning.

Cedar Ridge tied the game in the top of the second when Hailey Clendennen was plated on a sacrifice to tie the game.

Wing got out of the inning unscathed, but she had 30 pitches in the inning and 48 through two innings.

The Lady Raiders took the lead in the top of the third on a solo home run by Brooke Saldana to lead off the inning.

Cedar Ridge would take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning after Breanna Paul scored on an RBI-single from Saldana.

While the Lady Raiders were building their lead, Merrill was silencing the Elgin bats as Chelsea Everage (3 for 3, RBI) was the only Lady Cat to get a hit other than Olson through three innings.

However, Elgin was about to open the flood gates.

Alyssa Wilkins led off the bottom of the fourth inning by being hit by a pitch. She later scored on a double from Olson.

Hailey Sewalson reached base on an error and tied the game on a double from Abby Prinz.

With her team rallying behind her, Wing went untouched in the top of the fifth and almost had a perfect inning if had not been for a walk on the leadoff batter.

Elgin then unloaded its arsenal in the bottom of the inning.

Swenson hit a single to center field, followed by another one from Morgan Schultz to left.

Wilkins loaded the bases with a single of her own to left field and Sewalson proved to be the hero of the game with a double to center field that scored Swenson and Schultz to give Elgin a 5-3 lead with no outs.

But the Lady Cats weren’t done.

Adriana Hernandez tripled to left field to score Sewalson and was later plated on an RBI-single from Everage.

Everage came home on a double from Bailey Alanis with two outs.

Merril got out of the inning by striking out Swenson, but Elgin had already done enough damage.

Wing had a perfect inning in the top of the sixth, throwing just 11 pitches, but gave up her second home run of the game in the top of the seventh, a two-run blast from Merrill with one out.

Wing, however, struck out Dulce Escamilla and got Paul to ground out to finish the game and pick up the win.

“I am proud of us responding the way we did coming off of (Thursday),” Wolf said. “I think we need to build from this.”

Wilkins was 2 for 3 with two runs while Sewalson was 1 for 2 with three RBIs, two runs and a double. Hernandez was 1 for 3 with a triple and RBI and Abby Prinz was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

Elgin kept responding with a 13-1 win Saturday over Early in the final day of the Belton Tournament.

Alanis went 3 for 3 with an RBI in the winning effort.

Elgin will host Austin High Friday at 6:30 p.m.

ROUND ROCK – The bubble from Bastrop’s first district win Friday was quickly burst Monday as the Cedar Ridge Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Bears 10-0 in five innings in Round Rock.

Cedar Ridge jumped on Bastrop in the first inning building a 5-0 lead and led 6-0 going into the fourth inning.

That’s when the Lady Raiders added three more runs to set up the run-rule victory.

Maddie Parker and Kaitie Gurton were the only two Bastrop players to get a hit against Cedar Ridge.

Friday, Bastrop run-ruled Manor 12-2 in six innings doing the same thing to the Lady Mustangs as Cedar Ridge did on Monday to the Lady Bears.

Bastrop jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and led 10-0 going into the fourth.

However, Manor got a run in the top of the inning to hold of the inevitable 10-run rule.

After giving up a run in the top of the sixth, Bastrop solidified the win with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Lillian Raemsch picked up the win on the mound.

Rachel West had two doubles while Tori Spakes, Maureen Byrd, Caroline Castor, Parker, Raemsch, Gisella Paranich, Ashley Murray and Becca Roe each had hits in the winning effort.

The Bastrop Lady Bears picked up their only win Thursday during the first day of the Bastrop Classic, defeating Bastrop County-rival Smithville 4-2 in three innings at Lady Bear Field at Bastrop High School.
Bastrop, playing as the away team, jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning.
Gisella Parnisch led off the inning with a double, followed by another double from Rachel West to score Parnisch.
Tori Spakes was walked by Smithville pitcher Morgan Harris to put runners on first and second.
After Harris struck out Maureen Byrd and Becca Roe in consecutive at bats, Maddie Parker singled to score Spakes and West, but was thrown out at second for the final out of the inning.
Smithville responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs coming from Trina Deyo and Cadie Jones.
Macy Wilhelm led off the inning with a single, but was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice from Deyo.
Deyo would reach third on an error and was plated by a double from Jones, who later scored on a double from Audrei Rogers.
Bastrop pitcher Sarah Waldron got some help from her defense after walking Sam Emperton when Rogers was tagged out trying to reach third for the final out of the inning.
Bastrop added a cushion run in the top of the second from Ashley Murray, who led off the inning with a single.
She later scored on an error, but despite hits from Parnisch, and West, the Lady Tigers got out of the inning only giving up the run to Murray.
Smithville got its only hit in the bottom of the second from Taylor Hayworth as Kellie Rice led off the inning grounding out, followed by an error to put Ashlyn Bararrowski on first. Bararrowski was tagged out at second and Waldron struck out Wilhelm to get out of the inning untouched.
Harris retired three straight batters in the top of the third, but Smithville couldn’t get anything going despite singles from Randi Smith and Jones.
In the two teams’ later other games, Bastrop lost to Taylor 5-0 in the first game of the day and lost to Del Valle 7-2.
Smithville also lost to Del Valle 2-0 and defeated Taylor 7-2.
Rain postponed the tournament Friday and threatens today’s bracket games.
