Area athletes triumph in face of adversity.

The town of Bastrop suffered what was the greatest disaster its ever seen.

The Bastrop County Complex Fire, which started Sept. 4, burnt 1,645 homes and over 34,000 acres of land.

It was difficult to find anyone not affected in some way by the fires.

The state’s most destructive wildfire destroyed the homes of 11 Bastrop football players, a few assistant coaches, several Smithville football players and homes of Bastrop and Smithville volleyball players

Sporting events were cancelled for the week as athletes from Bastrop and Smithville spent their time off volunteering in shelters.

Rivalries were non-existent as there was an overwhelming level of reaching out from both schools rivals and opponents for that week.

Volleyball players from Elgin collected athletic clothing for players on the Bastrop volleyball team as did the Round Rock Cedar Ridge volleyball team.

Wimberley’s football team held an intra-squad scrimmage to raise money for the Smithville football players affected by the fires. The Texans were the Tigers scheduled opponent for Sept. 9.

Bastrop returned to the football field on Sept. 15 against San Marcos in front of a televised audience in Central Texas.

Everyone across the state was cheering on a team that had four practices in 12 days and was looking to triumph over something much bigger than football.

As the Bastrop football team ran onto the field, the Bears came through a banner that read, “Out of the ashes, we rise.”

And Bastrop did just that.

The Bears defeated San Marcos 48-23 in front of a packed house at BISD Memorial Stadium.

Running back Trae Bunton had one of his biggest games of the year, scoring four touchdowns while rushing for 101 yards on 16 carries.

Bunton said after the game, “We played with the town on our back.”

While the game was a distraction from the destruction of the fires, Bastrop’s win over San Marcos sparked the beginning of the healing process.

Meanwhile, just down the road on Texas 71, the Smithville football team also helped its town begin the healing process.

The Tigers defeated Needville 69-0 in front of a packed house at Barry Field, only holding offensive possession for a little more than nine minutes the entire game.

Smithville jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter and scored 14 points in less than two minutes.

Bastrop’s volleyball team returned to the court on Sept. 14 and battled with Connally.

While the Lady Bears didn’t pick up the win, they played one of the best games of the year.

Connally won the match in four sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-27, 25-15.

Bastrop’s players honored the fire fighters before the game with each player individually thanking the first responders for saving their house.

Player of the Year
Kelsey Harkins, Sr., Elgin
If there was ever a case for an all-around player, Elgin’s Kelsey Harkins would be it. Her sheer presence on the volleyball court made opponents change their game plan when the Lady Cats came to town. Granted, Harkins was one of several players teams facing Elgin had to account for on the court. However, Harkins could play every area of the game. She had a county-best .265 hitting percentage, making her the most efficient hitter on the court. Harkins averaged 3.7 kills and 2.8 digs per game (set). She finished the season with 274 total kills, 207 total digs, 46 blocks, 57 aces and 198 assists. Harkins will continue her volleyball career next year at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana.

Coach of the Year

Elgin took care of the first part of its mission to get to the playoffs Tuesday, sweeping their rival Bastrop, 25-12, 25-11, 25-12.

The Elgin Lady Cats entered Bear Gym Tuesday on a mission and ruined senior night for the Bastrop Lady Bears in their home finale.

Elgin took care of the first part of its mission, sweeping their rival, 25-12, 25-11, 25-12.

The win put the Lady Cats (20-18, 9-5 District 16-4A) two games ahead in the race for the final playoff spot, needing only a win Friday over three-win Cedar Creek at Wildcat Gymnasium to punch their ticket to the postseason for the fourth-straight season under head coach Hollie Huston.

Huston, who gave birth to her son Thursday, was on the bench Tuesday to coach her team in the final stretch of their games.

Elgin played near flawless volleyball in the first set as Kelsey Harkins and company took the set 25-12 after jumping out to a 7-0 lead.

Bastrop (8-29, 3-12) looked flustered through most of the match, missing passes and making crucial errors.

The Lady Bears never held a sizable lead, but did lead 3-0 in the second set before Elgin pulled away to take the set 25-11.

It was pretty much the same in the third set as Elgin never missed a beat and took the third set 25-12 to complete the sweep.

Harkins had a match-high 14 kills to go with one block and 10 digs. Shelbi Swenson had eight kills for Elgin to go with a block, two aces and 11 digs.

Bastrop County assist leader Morgan Schultz had 26 assists while Alyssa Wilkins and Erin Ramirez had two aces each for the Lady Cats.

One bright spot for the Lady Bears was the play of sophomore middle blocker Addison Semer, who continued her dominance at the net like she has all season.
Semer had a match-high six blocks to go with three kills.

Senior Maci Lott led Bastrop with six kills to go with 13 digs while Kaitlyn Cook had a match-high 16 digs.

Bastrop will close its season Tuesday at Cedar Creek while Elgin will host Hutto in its season finale. Both matches are scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

SMITHVILLE — The Smithville Lady Tigers are standing on history’s doorstep.

Smithville defeated Navasota Tuesday 25-9. 25-16, 25-18 at Tiger Gym putting the Lady Tigers in position to make their first postseason appearance in volleyball in school history.

For that to happen, however, Smithville (18-13, 4-4 District 23-3A) would have had to defeat second-place Giddings Friday and third-place Caldwell Tuesday.

A loss in one of those games wouldn’t end Smithville’s playoff aspirations.

The Lady Tigers would force a tie for third if they split their final two games of the season.

Smithville played its most complete game of the season against Navaosta and dominated the opening set, along with winning the second and third sets by a significant margin.

Madison Hannusch had eight kills to go with six blocks while Cadie Jones had eight kills and Trina Deyo had seven to go with 19 assists. Jones also had three aces.

Lindsey Carver and Julia Kubicek each had six kills while Taryn Leiferman had five on a great offensive night for the Lady Tigers.

Valarie Harmon and Adurei Rogers took care of the back-line defense with 19 and five digs, respectively.

Smithville will play its regular season finale Tuesday at home against Caldwell. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
